SUMMARY:PFN - just femme & dandy Magazine Seeks Submissions on the Theme: "SUSTAIN"
DESCRIPTION:just femme & dandy is a literary & arts magazine for and by the LGBTQIA+ community on fashion. We offer a space in the literary & arts world that has yet to exist\, and hope to celebrate the queer\, trans\, non-binary\, and intersex community\, who have long since coded ourselves with how we adorn and dress our bodies when it has been dangerous to identify solely with words. Until recently\, we could only find a handful of models within popular culture and the public imagination to inform our own aesthetic choices\, and so the styles (and art) we don and make operate as a patchwork quilt\, collaged together with vintage and thrift store finds\, our sister or mother’s lipstick and gowns\, our father’s neckties and waistcoats. \nThe theme for Vol. 3 will be SUSTAIN. How can we use fashion to sustain us during this incredibly trying time? How has fashion sustained you in other times\, whether it be in terms of pain\, joy\, crisis\, or other challenges? We’d especially liked to hear submissions regarding: trans + queer pregnancies\, femme/fae bodies\, chronic pain/disability\, and given this theme\, we’d love to hear from mutual aid + food communities! And! Tell us about those Zoom outfits! Did you take on roller skating as a pandemic activity? What are you wearing to the parking garage or the skate park? Tell us in (get your) thread in the game\, our new sports/fitness/etc section (edited by Jen St. Jude)! We also have a brand new section called not what it seams (edited by Meca’Ayo Cole)\, which focuses on costume/cosplay – tell us about those solutions in productions\, drag\, or on the runway\, where you sustained your body while letting the look shine! \n We have no word count limitations\, but we ask that you be thoughtful about length as it relates to screen fatigue. \njust femme & dandy is an anti-racist\, pro-Black space. We prioritize submissions from artists of color. We seek work that addresses fashion and style as it relates to the lives of people who are LGBTQIA+\, including but not limited to bodypositivity and fatpositivity\, mental illness\, neurodiversity\, chronic illness\, disability\, non-binary\, intersex\, artists with intellectual & developmental disabilities (IDD)\, and transgender lives.

SUMMARY:PF - Demos Rising Anthology: Historical and Modern Day Injustices and Breakthroughs
DESCRIPTION:In order to submit\, you must have bought a book (in any format) from the Fly on the Wall shop in 2022. (This will also qualify you to enter a manuscript to us in Autumn\, so definitely worth doing!) Email over the book receipt with your submission. \nIn an era of ‘post-truth’\, ‘fake news’ and misinformation\, the right to protest\, the right to a democratic society\, feel more urgent than ever. For anthology ‘Demos Rising’\, we will raise the voices of international writers and artists\, across genres and oceans\, to draw attention to worldwide injustices and celebrate the power of words to bring about change. \nWe will release the title in October 2022 and donate 5% of the profits to Amnesty International UK. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe want you to create a piece on an issue which you are passionate about\, whether that be human rights or animal rights. We seek nuance\, perspective and authenticity. Whilst ‘Demos Rising’ is inherently political in its aims\, and this naturally lends itself to powerful and fierce interpretations and approaches\, we also welcome interpretations of uprising which brim with possibility\, celebration and humour. \nYou could write about democracy – what it means to you\, what breeds without it\, or you could write about a specific human rights emergency. We want the anthology to cover historical and modern day injustices and breakthroughs. \nWhat has the power of protest brought about so far? \nNewspapers are a great place to gain inspiration\, as is the Amnesty International Website. \nWhat genres are we looking for? \nPoetry (up to 70 lines) \nShort Stories (up to 5k words) \nFlash Fiction (up to 1k words) \n\n\nGuidelines\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubmit your third person biography (up to 100 words)\, a short cover letter (just say why you want to submit to us and hello!) and up to three pieces in each category as listed above. \nThe submissions emails is flyonthewallpress@hotmail.com \nWe will respond to everyone by mid June. \nIf selected\, you will receive a free copy of the anthology\, discounts on further copies and the chance to perform at either a virtual or UK-based launch.

SUMMARY:PFN - Nat Brut Magazine: Blood & Water
DESCRIPTION:English-speakers often say that “blood is thicker than water” when talking about the bond of biological families. And yet\, for those who cannot survive by this adage\, there is the echo of a longer proverb:  “The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.” \nThis hidden inversion\, offering the possibility of a future more stable than our beginnings\, is a lifeline for survivors of developmental trauma. Without a stable past to tether us\, we float through life in a grief-state unnamable to those who have not lived within this space. We learn to speak in a shorthand of half-truths\, trying to translate the intimate loss of our childhood into terms intelligible for daily human interaction. \nBlood & Water is a rejection of this sanitized translation. Developmental trauma lives in a pre-linguistic space\, which means our experiences are bound to no recognizable shape or form. Here\, we invite survivors of all types of early trauma to create without fear of the truth. In this folio\, we believe that our wounds can be both grotesque and beautiful\, past and present\, universal and utterly unique\, if only we look long enough. \nWe encourage writers of all identities who carry the experience of developmental trauma to submit their work\, though we are particularly interested in the inherent queerness of creating chosen families in circumstances where biological families are unsafe. In any case\, this is a space for honesty and healing\, whatever that may look like for you. \n\nFolio Submission Guidelines\n\n\n\n\nWe aim to have a turn-around time of three months for all open submissions. \n\n\nPlease note that we are currently an online-only publication and are no longer releasing biannual print issues. Work accepted for publication online will\, however\, be considered for publication in any future Nat. Brut print anthology. \n\n\nPlease only send poetry\, stories and essays that are previously unpublished. We do accept simultaneous submissions\, but please let us know in your cover letter and be sure to withdraw your piece promptly (via an email notification to folio@natbrut.com) if it’s accepted elsewhere. \n\n\nFor poetry\, please submit one to five poems in a single document (max of 10 pages). \n\n\nFor essays\, please send one submission (max of 10 pages). \n\n\nWe consider stories of any length. Please limit one story per submission.

SUMMARY:F - Fix's Second Annual Imagine 2200 Climate Fiction Contest
DESCRIPTION:PREMISE\nFix\, Grist’s solutions lab\, invites you to submit a hope-filled climate fiction short story for our second annual contest\, Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors. \nStories must be set anytime between today and the year 2200\, and show a path to a clean\, green\, and just future. We especially want to read — and share — narratives that center solutions from the communities most impacted by climate change and stories that envision what a truly equitable\, decolonized society could look like. In 3\,000 to 5\,000 words\, show us the world you dream of building. \nOf course\, we don’t expect you to be overly optimistic or Pollyannaish; 178 years of equitable climate progress will involve hard work\, struggle\, and adaptation\, and we invite you to show that\, too. \nWe’re also especially interested in cultural authenticity (a deep sense of place\, customs\, cuisine\, and more); rich characters with intersecting identities; and stories that challenge the status quo in which wealth and power are built on extraction\, oppression\, and violence. \nWe’ll be looking for these core elements: \n\nHope\nVivid characters\nCultural setting\nCreative solutions\nDecolonized futures\n\nWe will also judge submissions based on the quality of artistic voice\, originality\, craft\, and technique\, as well as the depth of the environmental\, scientific\, historical\, and/or cultural background that informs the story. \nWhat we’re offering to winners:  \n\nCash prizes\nPublication on Fix’s site in the fall of 2022\nA reason to stay hopeful\n\nThe winning writer will be awarded $3\,000\, with the second- and third-place finalists receiving $2\,000 and $1\,000\, respectively. An additional nine finalists will get $300 apiece. All winners and finalists will have their story published in an immersive collection on Fix’s website — each with its own original art — and will be celebrated in a public virtual event. \nThe deadline for submission is May 5\, 2022\, by 11:59 p.m. U.S. Pacific Standard Time. \nPublication Date: Fall 2022 \nInspiration: Imagine 2200 draws inspiration from Afrofuturism\, as well as Indigenous\, Latinx\, Asian\, disabled\, feminist\, and queer futures. The contest is also grounded in hopepunk and solarpunk — literary genres that uplift equitable climate solutions and continued service to one’s community\, even in the face of despair. \nWe are excited to see what you write and to dive into the worlds you create! \nNuts & bolts\n\nEntry is free!\nSubmissions close May 5\, 2022\, 11:59 p.m. U.S. Pacific Standard Time.\nThe contest is open to writers anywhere in the world.\nAuthors must be 18 years or older at the time of submission.\nSubmissions must be fictional stories between 3\,000 and 5\,000 words.\nSubmissions must be in 12-point Arial font and double-spaced. Pages must be numbered.\nWe do not accept previously published or simultaneous submissions (stories can only be submitted to this contest and not to others\, until we have informed you of the result).\nOnly one submission will be accepted per entrant.\nSubmissions will only be accepted through Submittable — click the “submit” button at the bottom of this page when you’re ready! If you need accessibility accommodations\, please email the team at imaginefiction@grist.org.\nStories will be judged by a board of literary experts\, including acclaimed authors and editors Grace L. Dillon\, Arkady Martine\, and Sheree Renée Thomas.\nThe first-prize story will be awarded $3\,000; second prize is $2\,000; and third prize is $1\,000. Nine additional finalists will each receive $300.\nAll 12 final stories will be published on Fix’s website\, and the authors will be celebrated in a virtual event.\nWorldwide copyright and ownership of each story remains with the author.\nIf a story is accepted for publication\, Grist retains the first serial rights of the work to publish\, produce\, reproduce\, distribute\, and market.\nAll other remaining rights revert to the author upon publication.

SUMMARY:PFN - Halfway Down the Stairs\, Theme: "Open and Shut"
DESCRIPTION:Halfway Down the Stairs publishes poetry\, fiction\, creative nonfiction\, and book reviews. We publish primarily literary and mainstream work\, but accept work in most genres\, with children’s literature and erotica as the exceptions. \nHalfway Down the Stairs accepts simultaneous submissions but are not interested in reprints. All work should be thoroughly proofread before it is submitted. They are not interested in cliche stories or anything with a trite punchline. \nHalfway Down the Stairs are open to submissions of three poems at a time\, or one piece of prose. Work in every genre should try to relate to the theme\, although they occasionally publish poetry that is unrelated to the theme if they feel that it is particularly good. They expect to receive all submissions via email and they have rather strict submission guidelines\, so make sure to review them before submitting. \n\nFiction OPEN\n\nWe accept fiction related to the theme of the issue. The fiction editors are looking mostly for short stories\, but we are happy to consider well-crafted flash fiction. We don’t want to be too strict with the guidelines\, because we appreciate originality\, creativity\, and stories that are off the beaten path. We like stories that grab us from the beginning\, make us think\, and keep us enthralled. Stories should be written confidently and fluidly\, avoiding too many adjectives or too much dialogue. We will be negatively distracted by poor grammar\, clichés\, and a lack of editing. \n\n\n\nDates:\n\nOpen to fiction submissions through 01 May 2022*\n\nAudience:\nOpen to a broad Audience. Excluding: Children.\nGenres:\n\n\n\n\nGENRE\nSUBGENRES\n\n\n\n\nGeneral General\n\n\n\nOpen to all/most Genres Open to all/most Genres\nExcluding: Erotica.\n\n\n\n\nStyles:\nOpen to all/most Styles\, including: Humorous\, Literary\, Mainstream\, Realist.\nTopics:\nOpen to all/most Topics\, including: Other (May vary).\nTheme: Open and Shut\nTypes/Lengths:\n\n\n\n\nTYPE\nLENGTH DETAILS\n\n\n\n\nFlash Fiction Flash Fiction\nUp to 1\,000 words.\n\n\nShort Story Short Story\n1\,000 – 5\,000 words.\n\n\n\n\nPayscale:\nWe list broad pay categories rather than payment specifics. SUMMARY:PF - The First Line: "Thomas hadn't expected to be alive when the town's time capsule was opened."
DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\nUpdated November 2\, 2021 \n\n\nWe love that writers around the world are inspired by our first lines\, and we know that not every story will be sent to us. However\, we ask that you do not submit stories starting with our first lines to other journals (or post them online on public sites) until we’ve notified you as to our decision (usually four weeks after the deadline). When the entire premise of the publication revolves around one sentence\, we don’t want it to look as if we stole that sentence from another writer. If you have questions\, feel free to drop us a line. \nAlso\, we understand that writers may add our first line to a story they are currently working on or have already completed\, and that’s cool. But please do not add our first line to a previously published story and submit it to us. We do not accept previously published stories\, even if they have been repurposed for our first lines. And\, just to be clear\, we do not accept simultaneous submissions. \nOne more thing while I’ve got you here: Writers compete against one another for magazine space\, so\, technically\, every literary magazine is running a contest. There are\, however\, literary magazines that run traditional contests\, where they charge entry fees and rank the winners. We do not – nor will we ever – charge a submission fee\, nor do we rank our stories in order of importance. Occasionally\, we run contests to help come up with new first lines\, or we run fun\, gimmicky competitions for free stuff\, but the actual journal is not a contest in the traditional sense. \nFiction: All stories must be written with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way\, unless otherwise noted by the editors. The story should be between 300 and 5\,000 words (this is more like a guideline and not a hard-and-fast rule; going over or under the word count won’t get your story tossed from the slush pile). The sentences can be found on the home page of The First Line’s website\, as well as in the prior issue. Note: We are open to all genres. We try to make TFL as eclectic as possible. \nPoetry: We do accept poetry\, though rarely. We have no restrictions on form or line count\, but all poems must begin with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way. \nAll Submissions: Writers should include a two- to three-sentence biography of themselves that we can use in the journal should your story\, poem\, or essay be accepted. \nMultiple Submissions: We don’t mind if you want to submit multiple submissions for the same issue. However\, it is unlikely we will use more than one of your stories or poems in the same issue. \nSubmissions: We prefer you send manuscripts via email to submission (@) thefirstline (dot) com. We accept stories in MS Word or Word Perfect format (we prefer attachments). Please do not send pdf versions of your story or links to Google docs. Make sure your name and contact information\, as well as your bio\, are part of the attachment. Stories also can be sent to The First Line‘s post office box. No manuscripts will be returned without an accompanying SASE with sufficient return postage. \nNotification: We don’t make decisions about submissions until after each issue closes. We typically send notices four weeks after the issue’s deadline to everyone who submitted. You can also check the website’s home page for each issue’s production status. \n\n\n\n\nPayment: We pay on publication: $25.00 – $50.00 for fiction\, $5.00 – $10.00 for poetry\, and $25.00 for nonfiction (all U.S. dollars). We also send you a copy of the issue in which your piece appears. You’ll receive your money and issue at the same time.

SUMMARY:Recreation.gov Announces 2022 "Share Your Story" Writing Contest for Outdoor Adventurists
DESCRIPTION:Recreation.gov has launched its second annual “Share Your Story” adventure writing contest\, inviting visitors of America’s federal public lands to submit stories detailing their experiences exploring and spending time in the great outdoors. Experiences must have taken place between January 1\, 2020 and April 30\, 2022. Visitors can submit stories from now until April 30\, 2022 for a chance to win great prizes and have their story featured on Recreation.gov. The 2021 inaugural contest generated nearly 1\,200 entries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGrand Prize Winner\, 2021 Share Your Story Contest\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“When Recreation.gov first launched the ‘Share Your Story’ contest in 2021\, we set out to discover stories from people across the nation who got outside to experience nature in a new way\, and particularly how those experiences helped them find peace\, tranquility\, or adventure during the first year of the pandemic\,” said Rick DeLappe\, Program Manager at Recreation.gov. “We were blown away by the entries\, many of which covered memorable moments with loved ones and a newfound sense of gratitude and appreciation for public lands and waters. We look forward to receiving more stories in 2022 of how the great outdoors has brought people peace\, enjoyment\, and a sense of togetherness\, with nature\, family\, or new friends you meet along the trail.” \n\n\nParticipants can submit stories that fall within up to two of four categories\, including Traditions (Old and New)\, RV/Campervans\, Family Trips\, and Activities and Adventure. \n“As we enter the third year of this global pandemic\, the outdoors continues to provide comfort and solace\,” said Eugenie Bostrom\, Recreate Responsibly Coalition Manager. “Brought together by a love of the places that sustain us\, our outdoor community continues to expand as more see the benefits of nature. The Recreate Responsibly Coalition\, in collaboration with Recreation.gov\, invites you to share your perspective and experiences of responsible and holistic outdoor recreation.” \nAs we reflect on the benefits that nature provides during challenging times\, we can rely on storytelling to keep us connected and to provide comfort. In celebrating stories of outdoor adventures or peace-seeking in nature\, we can see ourselves in each other and in the places that tie us together. The genesis of #RecreateResponsibly is to care for one another and for the places that we play or find solace\, and we can share that through insightful and uplifting recollections of our experiences.” \nParticipants can enter up to two stories during the contest period for a chance to be one of the total 29 winners of various prizes\, including: \n–       Three Grand Prize Winners: The first Grand Prize Winner will receive $1\,500 from an outdoor retailer\, the Second Grand Prize Winner will receive a $1\,000 from an outdoor retailer\, and the third Grand Prize Winner will receive $500 from an outdoor retailer. SUMMARY:N - Call for Submissions: New Literary Anthology on the Fibre Arts
DESCRIPTION:Knitting\, sewing\, embroidery\, crochet\, lacework\, felting\, beading and weaving have long been dismissed as “hobbies” or feminine pursuits. Editors Marita Dachsel and Nancy Lee are looking for essays (approx. 2\,000 to 5\,000 words) that engage fibre arts practice as a lens (positive or negative) through which to examine larger contemporary issues: identity\, technology\, climate change\, personal struggle\, politics\, family\, adventure\, relationship\, art\, science\, or any other complexities of life. These essays will challenge the traditional view of crafting and explore the role\, purpose\, frustration\, joy\, humour and necessity of fibre arts amidst the alienating pressures of modern life. \nWe are particularly interested in lived experiences and perspectives historically underrepresented in the fibre arts space\, work that challenges the dominant culture view and pushes beyond easy nostalgia and sentimentality to examine the unusual and unexpected. We invite essays that are formally inventive\, including graphic forms. \nDeadline for submission is April 15th\, 2022. Please send submissions to: fibreartsanthology@gmail.com. Contributors selected for publication will receive an honorarium as well as two contributor copies. The anthology will be published in fall 2023 by Arsenal Pulp Press.

SUMMARY:PFN - Open Minds Quarterly Seeks Submissions. Theme: "Cycles"
DESCRIPTION:Open Minds Quarterly is a literary journal that features explorations of life in a mad world. We welcome writing and art from people with lived experience of what is variously called mental health challenges\, mental illness\, madness\, and neurodivergence. We strive to promote these voices and perspectives by publishing work based on first-hand lived experience. \nThe theme for Summer 2022 will be: CYCLES. We encourage you to think of this theme broadly and incorporate into your work. Pieces that follow the theme will have a much higher chance of being selected for this issue than pieces that don’t follow the theme. Nonfiction\, reviews\, open letters\, and research should relate specifically to experiences of madness or mental health challenges. Poetry and fiction submissions do not need to focus on madness/mental health\, but we may prioritize pieces that we feel fit our mandate and this issue’s theme. \nYou may submit one (1) of the following: \n\nNONFICTION—First-hand accounts\, personal essays\, and memoir. 1 piece\, 3000 word limit.\nFICTION—Creative explorations of life through a mad lens. 1 piece\, 3000 word limit.\nRESEARCH—Studies on mental health that pass a formal ethics review. 1 piece\, 3000 word limit.\nLETTERS—Opinion pieces and letters for our editor or readers. 1 piece\, 3000 word limit.\n\nOR four (4) pieces of the following: \n\nPOETRY—From poets well-versed in mental health challenges. 4 piece limit.\nEXPERIMENTAL—Thinking and writing outside of the other boxes. 4 piece limit.\n\nWe accept simultaneous submissions. Please notify us as soon as possible if your work is accepted elsewhere. We do not publish work that has been selected for publication elsewhere. We do not accept previously published pieces. We do not publish excerpts from longer works. \nYou must be 18 or older to make a submission. \nPlease note\, it may take up to 60 days after the submission period has closed to review your submission.

SUMMARY:PFN - Apofenie Magazine: Re(writing) Home
DESCRIPTION:For many writers\, the idea of “home” emerges through imagined intimacies—entangled in the experiences of longing and belonging and textured through the languages of memory and loss. In the Epilogue to her biomythography\, Zami\, Audre Lorde describes how\, as a daughter of immigrants\, “once home was a long way off\, a place I had never been to but know out of my mother’s mouth.” Similarly\, James Baldwin remarked that “Perhaps home is not a place\, but an irrevocable condition.” Home is\, in many ways\, not a location but a contouring of one’s history\, both material and imagined. Moreover\, for those who live in the margins\, this concept often fails to capture the social cost of their liminality. In this issue of Apofenie\, we seek poetry\, prose\, and nonfiction that addresses this question of home—its problems\, possibilities\, architectures\, and mythologies. To what extent does the idea of home offer an apparatus for belonging? What are some of ways that it can be reclaimed and reimagined? We are especially interested in work that thematizes the problem of home amidst dislocation\, war\, post-coloniality\, disability\, and marginalized identities (including LGBTQ+). \nPlease send all submissions to apofeniemagazine@gmail.com. Submissions should specify genre and include a three-sentence biographical statement. Submissions must reflect the theme in order for consideration. \nWe accept simultaneous submissions as long as we are notified immediately if the work is accepted elsewhere. For translations\, we require a statement that you have received the author’s and/or the publisher’s permission to submit it for publication. We will not consider previously published work. All rights revert back to the author upon publication. \nUnfortunately\, we are not able to pay contributors at this time but are working on changing that. (If you’d like to help us support great literature\, become a Patreon subscriber). \nPoetry: 5 poems maximum \nFiction/Nonfiction: 5\,000 words maximum \nFlash Fiction: up to 1\,000 words
