SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to THEMA. Theme: "To The Pond"
DESCRIPTION:ALL SHORT STORIES AND POEMS MUST RELATE TO THE PREMISE “TO THE POND” \nThe premise (target theme) must be an integral part of the plot\, not necessarily the central theme but not merely incidental. Fewer than 20 double-spaced typewritten pages preferred. Indicate premise (target theme) on title page. Be sure to Indicate target theme in cover letter or on first page of manuscript. Include self-addressed\, stamped envelope (SASE) with each submission. Rejected manuscripts unaccompanied by an SASE will not be returned. Response time: 3 months after premise deadline. Note: No handwritten manuscripts will be considered. \nNO READER’S FEE. \nNOTE: Previously published pieces are welcome\, provided that the submission fits the theme and that the author owns the copyright. \nMail to: THEMA\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747. \nOutside the US: email thema@cox.net \nOn acceptance for publication\, we will pay the following amount: short story\, $25; short-short piece (up to 1000 words)\, $10; poem. \nCopyright reverts to author after publication. \nUnlike many publishers\, we prefer works submitted by the authors themselves\, without the involvement of an agent. \nNo handwritten manuscripts will be considered. \nNOTE: We do not accept e-mailed submissions EXCEPT from authors who live outside the U.S. \nFor those living outside the U.S.\, submit manuscript as an email attachment (readable by MSWord ― either as a DOC file or an RTF file)\, and include the following information on the title page: target theme\, title of work\, name of author\, email address and physical address. \n\n\n\n\nShort Stories: All types welcome―both traditional and experimental \nSend to: Virginia Howard\, editor\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747 \nOutside the US: email to Virginia Howard at thema@cox.net \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat we like: a carefully constructed plot; good character delineation; clever plot twists \nWhat we don’t like: bedroom/bathroom profanity.  Why? \n\nIt’s boring! Writers should be more creative than to depend on the same tired and dubious language crutches to express surprise\, disdain\, shock\, bemusement\, anger\, sadness\, and other emotions.\nSuch profanity\, used in excess\, often serves as a camouflage for a weak plot. If the plot is good\, the story can be told much more effectively in nonscatologic language even though a character in the story may be sleazy.\nStories of lasting quality rarely need it.\n\nPoetry: All types of poetic form welcome. Submit no more than three poems per theme\, please. If more than three poems are submitted\, we will read only the first three poems in the stack. \nSend to: Gail Howard\, poetry editor\, Box 8747\, Metairie\, LA 70011-8747 \nOutside the US: email to Gail Howard at thema@cox.net \nWhat we like: poems that are thoughtfully constructed and carefully distilled. \nWhat we don’t like: sexually explicit wording. Subtlety is more creative.

SUMMARY:PFN - 2022 SWHNM Mentorship Program: Call for Applications
DESCRIPTION:DVAN NEWS\n\n\n\n2022 SWHNM Mentorship Program: Call for Applications\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJan 16\, 2022\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShe Who Has No Master(s)\, image from “Yellow Echoes” project in progress\, 2021\nShe Who Has No Master(s) is initiating a creative writing mentorship program led by and designed for Vietnamese and SE Asian diasporic women and nonbinary writers. The centering of this perspective is important because in most educational settings the focus on subject matter and perspectives of women/nonbinary SE Asian diasporic women is marginal\, if not totally unaddressed. In creating educational spaces that center those viewpoints\, we create a nourishing space in which aspiring writers can see themselves\, explore\, and embrace their own particularities\, and create more expansively. These mentorships will address both creative and professional aspects involved in the writing life. These offerings fulfill a dire contemporary need in our nation’s current environment for creative writing education. \nMentorship courses will be formatted in a “low-residency” style\, of monthly mentorship “packet” exchanges (via email and online i.e. video chat correspondences) between mentors and mentees/writing students\, from May to August 2022. For our inaugural year\, in order to work within limitations and uncertainties presented by public health concerns\, this will be a remote-only mentorship course. Applicants may be located anywhere in the world (but must be willing to schedule with a mentor based in US and Canada time zones). \nMentorship is designed so that each student receives intensive one-on-one guidance from their mentor. Mentees and mentors will also convene online in several group sessions\, where mentees will get to interact\, share creative work\, and discuss aspects of craft with their peers and the other mentors. Mentees should be passionate and committed to exploring creative writing\, ready to generate new creative work\, engage in revision processes\, and capable of working both independently as well as from writing prompts given by mentors. Mentors will work with mentees to tailor creative writing guidance that meets the mentees’ specific interests and needs. \nThe mentors for our inaugural 2022 mentorship program will be: Diana Khoi Nguyen\, Hoa Nguyen\, Lily Hoang\, and Vi Khi Nao. \nIf you are selected for a mentorship\, you will receive 4 months of tuition-free mentorship\, an extremely unique opportunity for mentees to work closely with distinguished\, award-winning women writers of the Vietnamese diaspora. Our first cohort will engage 4 students and 4 mentors. \nApplication Guidelines\n\n\nTo apply\, please register here and pay the $25 application fee before February 28\, 2022. \nThen\, send the following applications materials to she.who.has.no.masters@gmail.com: \n\nStatement of purpose / interest in this program [up to 500 words]:\n\nHow will this program benefit your writing life? What do you hope to receive from this course?\nWhat type of work have you made / wish to make / are interested in exploring?\nTell us what it means for you to be a diasporic writer or artist.\n\n\nCreative resume / CV (indicating MFA and/or publishing history\, if applicable)\nWork Sample:\n\n10-20 pages of content total\, in one or a mixture of genres (example: you may submit 10 pages of textual material + 10 min. of video or audio; or 15 pages of poetry + a 5-min. video; etc.)\nOpen to any genre: poetry\, prose (fiction\, creative nonfiction)\, hybrid\, multimedia\, etc.\nIf supplying video or audio material\, up to 10 minutes total\nIf supplying text and/or image\, must be formatted to the page (PDF file preferred)\, 10-20 pages total\nEach file should indicate your full name and the file subject. For example: “JaneNguyen_Statement” “JaneNguyen_Resume” “JaneNguyen_WorkSample”\n\n\n\nNote: To send us video\, audio or other media files\, please provide a work sample item sheet that includes links (i.e. Vimeo\, YouTube) to where the material can be seen/heard. Using timecode\, indicate exactly which portion of the media you would like us to review\, if the existing link contains more than the allotted 10 minutes of material. Or\, by default\, we will review the first 5-10 min. of material. \nIf you have questions or issues regarding how to send us your application materials\, or if you are in need of an application fee waiver\, please DM us at: she.who.has.no.masters@gmail.com

SUMMARY:P - Call for Submissions to FERAL. Theme: "Time"
DESCRIPTION:Submissions\n\n\nSubmissions to FERAL: A Journal of Poetry & Art are currently OPEN! \n\nPhoto by Tim Mossholder on UnsplashCall\n\n\n\nWe’re open for submissions! The theme of our next issue is TIME. \nIsn’t it fascinating to think about the concept of time? It’s unique in the sense that all of us have the same amount of time in a day. But as you know all too well\, some people just seem to know how to make better use of it than others. At times\, it feels like you need more than 24 hours to get everything done. And during those fleeting moments when you clear your mind\, you realize that you’re in an endless race against time. \nPerhaps the best way to appreciate the value of time is to slow down. The clock will continue ticking\, but being mindful of every second allows you to identify the people\, things\, and activities that deserve most of your time. \nAnd while you’re at it\, you might want to listen to timeless hits\, many of which are actually songs about time. There are tons of songs with time in their titles\, and it’s interesting to dissect the distinctive message of each song. Some of them serve as reminders to take things easy and treasure what truly makes us happy. Others talk about how time is the only cure for the most painful wounds. Still\, some songs simply tell us to live in the moment. \nTo kick your thinking beanies into gear\, here’s a cool list of songs with TIME in the title! \n“One Moment in Time” by Whitney Houston\n“Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper\n“Love me Two Times” by The Doors\n“Time is on my Side” by The Rolling Stones\n“Does Anybody Really Know What Time it is?” by Chicago\n“Time of my Life” by David Cook\n“Any Time at all” by The Beatles\n“Too Much Time on my Hands” by Styx\n“Old Time Rock n Roll” by Bob Seger\n“Times Like These” by Foo Fighters\n“Remember the Time” by Michael Jackson\n“One More Time” by Daft Punk\n“All This Time” by Sting\n“As Time Goes By” by Jimmy Durante\n“Haven’t Got Time for the Pain” by Carly Simon\n“Let the Good Times Roll” by BB King\n“Time” by Hootie & The Blowfish\n“Same Time” by The Script\n“Somewhere in Time” by John Barry\n“Last Time” by Reece\n“Take Your Time” by Sam Hunt\n“Wasting my Time” by Insomnia & Resident\n“A Thousand Bad Times” by Post Malone\n“So Little Time” by Arkarna \n(See the full list here…) \nAs long as your submissions consider TIME in some way\, we wanna see them! Check out our general info below for details on how to submit. \n\nGeneral Submission Guidelines: FERAL: A Journal of Poetry & Art \nWe’ve made some changes to our guidelines so please read all the information below.  \nWhat we are looking for: We want your brave\, your pain\, your love\, your teeth\, your howling beast. All styles\, forms and schools of poetry are welcome.\nPlease note that at the core of both FERAL and Animal Heart press is love. Although we wish it didn’t need to be said\, we will not accept any work that is racist\, homophobic\, sexist or discriminatory. We are committed to publishing a variety of new\, emerging and established voices. Further\, we are committed to inclusion and equity in publishing. We highly encourage submissions from underrepresented voices including\, but not limited to: women\, BIPOC\, LGBTQIA+\, and neurodivergent individuals. International submissions are welcome\, but we are only considering work in English at this time; no translations.\nFERAL nominates for the Best of the Net and the Pushcart Prize. \nSubmissions should be sent to: feralpoetryandart[AT]gmail[DOT]com\nIn the subject line of your email please type: LAST NAME – TYPE OF SUBMISSION (for example: GORDON – POETRY).\nCover Letters: We’ve heard you loud and clear about how daunting many of you find writing cover letters\, so they are no longer required.\nIf you want to include a cover letter we’d like to know a little about you (this is not your bio but rather an introduction to you as a human/poet/artist). At a minimum\, in the body of your email\, please provide your name and preferred pronouns. \nPOETRY:\nFor poetry submissions\, please submit 1-4 poems and attach your submission in a single document (doc. docx. pdf.) Please do not put your name or any identifying information on the submission. We will consider all forms of poetry including erasure poetry and visual poetry – surprise us!

SUMMARY:N - CBC Nonfiction Prize
DESCRIPTION:Nonfiction (up to 2\,000 words)* \n\nThe Nonfiction Prize includes memoir\, biography\, humour writing\, essay (including personal essay)\, travel writing\, and feature articles. While the events must be real and the facts true\, creative nonfiction conveys your message through the use of literary techniques such as characterization\, plot\, setting\, dialogue\, narrative and personal reflection. The work should be accessible to a general reading audience (i.e.\, not written for a specialized or academic audience).\n\nCompetition opens: January 1\, 2022 \nDeadline: February 28\, 2022 \n*(Word count includes all words contained in the work including but not limited to titles\, footnotes\, introductions\, etc. Submissions over the specified word count will be disqualified.) \nOur word limits are strict in each category. To calculate word counts\, we put your entire submission (including the title) into Microsoft Word and use Word’s word counter. Since Word only relies on spaces to delimit words\, any term containing a hyphen (“twenty-five”) or an apostrophe (“can’t”\, “don’t”) counts as a single word. Word also counts every article (“the”\, “a”\, etc.) as a separate word. Microsoft Word also automatically counts groups of characters (e.g. “xxx”) as well as symbols (e.g. “***” or “~~~”) as a word. \nParticipants may submit as many texts as they wish in one or all categories. A writer can win only one prize per category. Each text may be submitted to only one category. \nFor each manuscript entered\, participants must complete a separate official entry form and pay the entry fee. \nParticipants must verify the exact deadlines on the cbcbooks.ca website. Please note that CBC/Radio-Canada is permitted to modify these deadlines at any time. \nOnline submission: all works must be submitted and payments must be made on or before 11:59 PM (ET) on the day of the deadline. \nWinners will be announced approximately six months after the deadline for each competition. \nHOW TO SUBMIT\nAll submissions must: \n\nBe submitted online by creating an account through Submittable. Submittable is an external site designated by CBC/Radio-Canada to manage the submissions to the competition. They adhere to CBC’s privacy policy.\nBe accompanied by the official entry form and the parental permission (electronic or print version) if applicable\nBe submitted anonymously: the name of the entrant must not appear anywhere on the text to ensure the objectivity of the jury\nBe submitted in Word or Wordpad (.doc\, .rtf or .docx) format\, in letter format (8½” by 11”)\nBe double spaced\, except for poetry texts\nBe in a legible font and font size\nBe submitted to the correct category during the entry period for that category\n\nIf you are unable to submit your content online\, please contact the CBC Literary Prizes team to obtain an alternate form of entry. \nRestrictions: \n\nAll submissions are final: no changes or substitutions are allowed\nNo handwritten manuscripts or fax texts will be accepted\nTexts will not be returned and editorial comments will not be given on the works\n\nFees: \nA fee of $25.00 (taxes included) for administration purposes is required for each entry. The competition is 100% not-for-profit\, with all fees going towards covering administrative costs\, which include payment of readers and jurors of the competition. Participants are not eligible until payment of the registration fee has been received and cashed. The entry fee will not be refunded if your submission is ineligible. All submissions are final: entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. \nJUDGING\nWorks are judged anonymously on the basis of the participant’s use of language\, originality of subject and writing style. \nOnly the work submitted will be considered by the judges\, other documents\, images\, diagrams etc. are not eligible for consideration by the judges. \nSubmissions are processed by a two-tiered system in both languages (English\, French) by readers and jurors. \nThe initial texts are screened by readers chosen for each category from a group of qualified editors and writers across the country. Each text is read by two readers. \nThe English readers come up with a preliminary list of approximately 100 texts that are then forwarded to a second group of readers who will decide upon the approximately 30 entries that comprise the longlist and be forwarded to the jury. \nThe French readers come up with a longlist of approximately 20 texts that are forwarded to the jury. \nThe English and French juries will read all stories on the longlist and decide on a shortlist of five in each language\, which will include a first-place winner and four runners-up. The members of the jury (three per category) are composed of eminent writers and editors from the Canadian literary community. \nEvery effort is made to achieve a balance of gender and diversity in the readers and judges and to reflect regional differences and trends. The readers and jurors change every year and are based in different areas of the country. \nJurors and readers in each category will be chosen by CBC/Radio-Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Banff Centre. \nAll decisions by the readers and the jury are final (subject to meeting any conditions and eligibility criteria as determined by CBC). Readers’ names are confidential until the end of the competition to ensure the judging process remains blind. \nPRIZES\nCanada Council for the Arts will offer five cash prizes in each category and in each language: \n\nGrand Prize: $6\,000\nFour finalists will receive $1\,000 each\n\nMoreover\, the Grand Prize winner will receive a two-week residency at The Banff Centre approximately valued at $2\,500 which will include: \n\naccommodation and meals at The Banff Centre for two weeks;\n24-hour access to a studio; and\nopportunities to access Banff Centre events and performances for free.\n\nWinners must use their prize within two years of the prize award\, at a time mutually agreeable to the Banff Centre and the prize winner. This prize does not include travel costs to and from the residency at Banff. \nMoreover\, CBC/Radio-Canada will provide visibility to winners and their work on one or more of its platforms. \nParticipants may win only one prize per category. Participants maintain ownership of their works\, although rights to reproduce and distribute them to the public are limited by the licenses granted according to these rules. \nThe prize is not transferable and includes only what is specifically mentioned in these rules. If for any reason whatsoever\, the winner is unable to use the prize in whole or in part or is unwilling to accept or take advantage of the prize as described\, or a portion thereof\, the prize or portion thereof will be forfeited without compensation and CBC/Radio-Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts\, The Banff Centre and their affiliated companies or agents\, as well as their respective directors\, officers and employees\, will be released from all obligations toward the winner with regards to the prize or portion thereof. \nIf a prize cannot be awarded as described in these rules\, CBC/Radio-Canada\, The Banff Centre and the Canada Council for the Arts reserve the right to substitute one or more prizes or prize components with another of approximately equivalent value. \nTo be proclaimed winners or finalists\, participants must meet all the conditions and eligibility criteria set out in these rules. The winners and finalists\, or in the of case minors\, their parents or guardians\, shall provide information requested by CBC in this regard\, and shall sign a declaration of eligibility for the competition\, as set out in these rules\, and release CBC/Radio-Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts\, The Banff Centre and their affiliated companies or agents\, as well as their respective directors\, officers and employees\, from any liability for damage or loss whatsoever\, whether arising from the participants’ involvement in this competition or from the awarding\, acceptance or use of the prize. \nA winner’s refusal to accept a prize releases CBC/Radio-Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts\, The Banff Centre and their affiliated companies or agents\, as well as their respective directors\, officers and employees\, from all obligations toward the winner. \nELIGIBILITY \nTexts submitted to CBC Literary Awards must be written in English (texts written in several languages and translations are not eligible). Texts written in French must be submitted to the Prix de la création Radio-Canada. \nCanadian citizens\, whether living in Canada or abroad\, and permanent residents of Canada are eligible to enter. \nFor any participant who has not reached the age of majority in his/her province or country of residence\, parental or guardian consent is necessary to enter the competition. \nPeople who work for CBC/Radio-Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts\, the Banff Center\, their affiliates\, as well as the members of the jury and the selection committee (readers)\, as well as their immediate family (father-mother\, brother-sister\, son-daughter) and people living under the same roof during the registration period of the prize are not eligible for this prize. For example\, if one of the people listed above (immediate family or person living under the same roof as one of these people) works at one of the companies listed above during the registration period for the Short Story category but is no longer in the employ of this company during the registration period for the Poetry and Nonfiction Prizes\, they could participate in the Poetry and Nonfiction Prizes but not in Short Story. \nPreviously published participants may submit texts providing that the submissions are original unpublished works. There must be only one author per entry. \nAll works that have been published or broadcast are considered not eligible for the competition. \nRIGHTS\nParticipants warrant that the work they are submitting is an original and unpublished work written by them and that they own all rights to it. Participants will indemnify and hold CBC/Radio-Canada\, Banff Centre and Canada Council for the Arts and their affiliates\, harmless from and against any and all loss\, damage\, costs and other expense arising out of claims\, whatever their nature\, resulting directly or indirectly from breach of this warranty. \nParticipants submitting to the prize \nIn submitting their work\, each participant grants CBC/Radio-Canada (both for French and English services) the following licenses free of charge and irrevocably: \nThe right to translate an excerpt from the work submitted (no more than 15% of its total length)\nThe non-exclusive right to reproduce and publish an excerpt from the work submitted (no more than 15% of its total length) on the websites and platforms controlled or authorized by CBC/Radio-Canada\, both in the original language and in translation \nFinalists and winners\nIn accepting a prize\, the winners and finalists grant to CBC/Radio-Canada\, for the entire term of all rights\, the following licenses: \nThe right to translate the work\nThe right to reproduce and publish the work in all formats\, including on the websites and platforms controlled or authorized by CBC/Radio-Canada and on any future merchandise\, both in the original language and in translation; net income from any sale or exploitation of merchandise shall be split 50/50 between CBC/Radio-Canada and the participant or participants\nThe right to make an audio/video recording by means of any existing or not-yet-invented technology\, to distribute and broadcast readings of works or excerpts therefrom in the original language or in translation\, on CBC/Radio-Canada networks and websites/platforms controlled or authorized by CBC/Radio-Canada\nThe right to edit\, abridge or excerpt the work for the purposes of publication or broadcast. SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to The Medley. Theme: "Layers"
DESCRIPTION:The Medley is now accepting entries for its seventh issue! The submission window will remain open till 15 February 2022. \nFor this issue\, we are on the lookout for works that articulate the theme\, LAYERS.\nLayers are veils of identities. All the skins we adorn and all the thoughts we carry are all nothing but layers that blanket our existence and layers that showcase our potential. They conceal us; they become us. Layer by layer\, we all are a thousand someone or a hundred something\, shouting\, starving\, and searching for an identity. \nThe layers of our feral world are ever-increasing in the changing geopolitics\, in epidemic proportions\, and in the sense of community. We all end up housing these layers of the world in us\, which mask and unmask our real selves. \nLayers are diverse and colourful. Within a feral world do they paint our canvas with shades of identities. From these thousand combinations and hundred dichotomies\, emerges an authentic you. A you that is layered in uniqueness. \nNon-themed submissions will also be accepted for the issue. \nThe guidelines below provide basic information on submissions that may be accepted. Look for per issue announcement to learn more. \n\n\nGeneral Guidelines\n\n\nWe wish to invite themed as well as non-themed entries for the sections of Fiction\, Non-Fiction and Poetry\, with any variety of style\, structure\, content and genre. In general\, we’re looking for work from emerging writers and poets that has unbridled originality\, raw energy and doesn’t shy away from coming into its own. We want poetry and prose that sings\, fragments itself and takes flight. Give us your best\, most daring pieces\, exploring new terrains and new metaphors\, pieces that sketch out paths and avenues in an otherwise unknown wasteland. We’re looking for diversity\, versatility and for new voices of representation from all over the globe.\nPROSE: Only 1 piece at a time\, 2500 words maximum. \nPOETRY: Up to 3 poems at a time\, no length limits. \nProse and poetry should ideally be directly pasted in the body of the email. If your work requires special formatting\, you may send it as an attachment\, preferably in the form of a word document. PDF files are also acceptable. \n\n\nAll submissions have to be accompanied by a short third-person bio of no more than 100 words\, along with a headshot/photograph of the submitter as an attachment. \n\n\nThe category of your work – fiction\, non-fiction\, poetry – has to be mentioned in the subject of the submission email. Also state whether your submission is themed or non-themed. Before you send work\, please familiarize yourself with The Medley and our editorial practices by going through our older issues available on the website. \n\n\nWe allow only for previously unpublished works. You can send your entries to themedleyostraca@gmail.com. We are open to simultaneous submissions (so long as you classify them as such and immediately let us know if they’re accepted elsewhere). \n\n\nPlease submit no more than once per category per reading period. To put it simply\, you can submit upto three poems\, one fiction piece and/or one non-fiction for any particular issue when the submission window is open. Additional submissions will be ignored. If your work has been featured in The Medley in the past\, please wait at least half a year\, or one issue\, from the date of your publication before submitting again. \n\n\nThe Medley requires First Serial Rights and all archival rights. All rights revert back to the author upon publication. If your work appears elsewhere in print or online\, please give due credit to The Medley as the place where your work first appeared. \n\n\nFor any queries\, you can email us at themedleyostraca@gmail.com. We try to respond to submissions within 4-8 weeks of receiving them. If you do not hear from us till then\, you can drop us an email at the above-mentioned address.

SUMMARY:PN - Multiplicity Magazine Call for Submissions. Theme: "At Any Age"
DESCRIPTION:Submitting to Multiplicity Literary Magazine\nSpring/Summer 2022: At Any Age \nWere you sixteen when you arrived in a new country\, forty-one when you finally felt comfortable in your own skin? Twelve when you lost your best friend\, sixty-seven when you went back to school? How old was your mother\, your brother\, your lover? For this issue\, we seek stories of milestones\, large and small. We want to read about the day the training wheels came off the bike\, or the day you failed your driving test. The moment you knew you’d marry your wife\, or the moment you knew you had to leave your husband.  We want to read stories of youth\, stories of eldering\, stories about you\, stories about others\, stories combed from memory\, stories unfolding now. Life happens at any age. How old were you—or they—when… \n\nFor the magazine\, we seek nonfiction up to 4\,000 words\, and poetry (up to three poems per writer)\nFor our “Quick Work” series\, we seek micro-nonfiction and poetry\, 100 words or fewer\, on the same theme. \n\n\nAbout Multiplicity Magazine and the Submissions We Seek  \nMultiplicity Literary Magazine publishes two issues annually\, one in the fall* and one in the spring. We consider submissions of short-form creative nonfiction (500-1\,500 words)\, long-form creative nonfiction (1\,500-5\,000 words)\, poetry\, flash nonfiction (up to 500 words) from established and emerging writers.  We pay $45 per essay and $15 per poem (up to three). \nPlease see our About Multiplicity Magazine page for more details about the type of work we seek to publish. \nStyle Guidelines for Multiplicity Magazine Submissions \nMultiplicity Magazine submissions must be sent in digital format via Submittable. Text submissions should be sent in a file format that can readily be edited on a computer (Microsoft Word is preferred). \nOur literary magazine submission process is blind. Please do not include your name or other personally identifying information on any of the pages of your submission or in the file name. Do include a cover letter providing complete\, accurate contact information for you. \nNonfiction submissions should be in Times New Roman or a similar serif font\, 12 pt\, with one-inch margins all around. Please paginate and include the title of the work on each page. All work should be carefully proofread before it is submitted. \nPoetry submissions may include up to three poems per issue; stanzas should be single spaced and there should be no more than one poem per page. We welcome poetry in languages other than English if an English version/translation is also provided. \nSee our Usage Rights page for information about the rights we request upon publication. \n

SUMMARY:PF - The First Line: "Rayna sat in front of the mirror removing her makeup and wondered who she would discover underneath"
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of The First Line is to jump start the imagination-to help writers break through the block that is the blank page. Each issue contains short stories that stem from a common first line; it also provides a forum for discussing favourite first lines in literature. The First Line is an exercise in creativity for writers and a chance for readers to see how many different directions we can take when we start from the same place. \nFiction: All stories must be written with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way\, unless otherwise noted by the editors. The story should be between 300 and 5\,000 words (this is more like a guideline and not a hard-and-fast rule; going over or under the word count won’t get your story tossed from the slush pile). The sentences can be found on the home page of The First Line’s website\, as well as in the prior issue. Note: We are open to all genres. We try to make TFL as eclectic as possible. \nPoetry: We do accept poetry\, though rarely. We have no restrictions on form or line count\, but all poems must begin with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way. \nAll Submissions: Writers should include a two- to three-sentence biography of themselves that we can use in the journal should your story\, poem\, or essay be accepted. \nMultiple Submissions: We don’t mind if you want to submit multiple submissions for the same issue. However\, it is unlikely we will use more than one of your stories or poems in the same issue. \nSubmissions: We prefer you send manuscripts via email to submission (@) thefirstline (dot) com. We accept stories in MS Word or Word Perfect format (we prefer attachments). Please do not send pdf versions of your story or links to Google docs. Make sure your name and contact information\, as well as your bio\, are part of the attachment. Stories also can be sent to The First Line‘s post office box. No manuscripts will be returned without an accompanying SASE with sufficient return postage. \n\n\nNotification: We don’t make decisions about submissions until after each issue closes. We typically send notices four weeks after the issue’s deadline to everyone who submitted. You can also check the website’s home page for each issue’s production status. \n\n\n\n\nPayment: We pay on publication: $25.00 – $50.00 for fiction\, $5.00 – $10.00 for poetry\, and $25.00 for nonfiction (all U.S. dollars). We also send you a copy of the issue in which your piece appears. You’ll receive your money and issue at the same time. \n\n\n\n\n\nNote to our international writers: Postage cost for sending author copies overseas is a little high\, so we are reducing international author payment by the amount it would cost to send one author copy overseas. However\, if you would like to receive an electronic version of the issue (PDF) instead of a hard copy\, author payment will not change.

SUMMARY:F - Clash of the Query Letters Contest
DESCRIPTION:In the fiction world\, a query letter alone is not enough to land representation. The manuscript’s first sentence\, first paragraph\, and first page are the crucial test. However\, a query letter acts as a writer’s resume or c/v. It sets the tone\, lays out the book’s market potential\, and introduces the human behind the words and ideas. And of course\, it also pitches the story itself. While an ideal query letter may not seal the deal\, it will fill literary agents with eager excitement—a most helpful frame of mind for them to be in as they turn to your sample pages.\n\nOur judge\, Michelle Barker\, will be asking herself one question:\ndoes this query letter convince me that I’m in the hands of an adept \nnovelist with a unique and engaging story to tell?\n\nFirst place: $700 CAD\n\nSecond place: $200 CAD\nThird place: $100 CAD\n\nAll three finalists will be published on the Chopping Blog and receive\ncomplimentary access to a Darling Axe self-paced course. \nTHE FINER POINTS\n• Entry is $5 CAD \n• Optional feedback for $20 CAD\n• One page: maximum 500 words\n• Original\, unpublished\, unrepresented work only\n• Once you’ve paid\, send your docx/pdf to contest@darlingaxe.com\n• Submission deadline: January 31

SUMMARY:N - Yes! Magazine Call for Submissions: The Pleasure Issue
DESCRIPTION:The oppressive systems under which we all live make our every experience one of transaction\, production\, or accumulation. These experiences have convinced us to believe that only certain people—those who identify as White or wealthy or able-bodied or male—are deserving of or entitled to experience pleasure. Likewise\, these systems insist that pleasure is a luxury\, only rightfully enjoyed as a reward for narrowly defined\, capitalistic “success\,” rather than an inherent—and necessary—human experience. \nIn our work toward transformation\, equity\, and justice for all\, many of us deny ourselves the actual experiences of aliveness that we’re fighting for. In the face of urgent crises\, we exalt the struggle\, believing pleasure is something that is either inaccessible to us or that we don’t deserve until we win our collective liberation. \nBut without pleasure\, there is no true liberation. The more just\, equitable\, compassionate world that we seek to build must include the experience of pleasure by all. \nIn the 2022 summer issue of YES! Magazine\, The Pleasure Issue\, we will interrogate the underlying beliefs that keep us from feeling joy and satisfaction in our lives\, including the beliefs that we don’t deserve pleasure\, that we can’t access pleasure without money\, that it’s impossible for justice and pleasure to coexist\, that “doing the work” has to be centered in pain and suffering\, and that we can’t take time for joy amid our struggles. \nThe solutions we’ll explore will include unlearning individualism in favor of a collective worldview rooted in pleasure. At a collective level\, this may include following the impulse of yes\, seeking the experience of belonging\, and leaning into feelings of delight\, wonder\, joy\, and contentment. At the individual level\, it may include discovering how to find balance in the things that give us pleasure\, learning to harness the power and wisdom of pleasure\, organizing with a focus on what we long for and love rather than what we are resisting\, and listening to and living from the body. \nWhere are there compelling stories on these topics in your communities? Send us your leads and pitches for reported stories on initiatives or groups that cultivate pleasure as a possibility for transformational change. \nAll of the stories we seek will be examples of excellent journalism and storytelling: stories that are well-researched with compelling characters and that demonstrate struggle and resolution. Hurry and send your pitches to summer2022@yesmagazine.org by Jan. 23 to be considered for the summer issue. (After that\, you can continue to send them to submissions@yesmagazine.org.)
