We believe that intent to act ethically\, clarity of guidelines\, and transparency of process form the foundation of an ethical contest. To that end\, we agree to 1) conduct our contests as ethically as possible and to address any unethical behavior on the part of our readers\, judges\, or editors; 2) to provide clear and specific contest guidelines—defining conflict of interest for all parties involved; and 3) to make the mechanics of our selection process available to the public. This Code recognizes that different contest models produce different results\, but that each model can be run ethically. We have adopted this Code to reinforce our integrity and dedication as a publishing community and to ensure that our contests contribute to a vibrant literary heritage. \nCrazyhorse Annual Contest Selection Process \n1st Round of Judging: Blind Read by Genre Editors. SUMMARY:F - Clash of the Query Letters Contest
DESCRIPTION:In the fiction world\, a query letter alone is not enough to land representation. The manuscript’s first sentence\, first paragraph\, and first page are the crucial test. However\, a query letter acts as a writer’s resume or c/v. It sets the tone\, lays out the book’s market potential\, and introduces the human behind the words and ideas. And of course\, it also pitches the story itself. While an ideal query letter may not seal the deal\, it will fill literary agents with eager excitement—a most helpful frame of mind for them to be in as they turn to your sample pages.\n\nOur judge\, Michelle Barker\, will be asking herself one question:\ndoes this query letter convince me that I’m in the hands of an adept \nnovelist with a unique and engaging story to tell?\n\nFirst place: $700 CAD\n\nSecond place: $200 CAD\nThird place: $100 CAD\n\nAll three finalists will be published on the Chopping Blog and receive\ncomplimentary access to a Darling Axe self-paced course. \nTHE FINER POINTS\n• Entry is $5 CAD \n• Optional feedback for $20 CAD\n• One page: maximum 500 words\n• Original\, unpublished\, unrepresented work only\n• Once you’ve paid\, send your docx/pdf to contest@darlingaxe.com\n• Submission deadline: January 31

SUMMARY:N - Yes! Magazine Call for Submissions: The Pleasure Issue
DESCRIPTION:The oppressive systems under which we all live make our every experience one of transaction\, production\, or accumulation. These experiences have convinced us to believe that only certain people—those who identify as White or wealthy or able-bodied or male—are deserving of or entitled to experience pleasure. Likewise\, these systems insist that pleasure is a luxury\, only rightfully enjoyed as a reward for narrowly defined\, capitalistic “success\,” rather than an inherent—and necessary—human experience. \nIn our work toward transformation\, equity\, and justice for all\, many of us deny ourselves the actual experiences of aliveness that we’re fighting for. In the face of urgent crises\, we exalt the struggle\, believing pleasure is something that is either inaccessible to us or that we don’t deserve until we win our collective liberation. \nBut without pleasure\, there is no true liberation. The more just\, equitable\, compassionate world that we seek to build must include the experience of pleasure by all. \nIn the 2022 summer issue of YES! Magazine\, The Pleasure Issue\, we will interrogate the underlying beliefs that keep us from feeling joy and satisfaction in our lives\, including the beliefs that we don’t deserve pleasure\, that we can’t access pleasure without money\, that it’s impossible for justice and pleasure to coexist\, that “doing the work” has to be centered in pain and suffering\, and that we can’t take time for joy amid our struggles. \nThe solutions we’ll explore will include unlearning individualism in favor of a collective worldview rooted in pleasure. At a collective level\, this may include following the impulse of yes\, seeking the experience of belonging\, and leaning into feelings of delight\, wonder\, joy\, and contentment. At the individual level\, it may include discovering how to find balance in the things that give us pleasure\, learning to harness the power and wisdom of pleasure\, organizing with a focus on what we long for and love rather than what we are resisting\, and listening to and living from the body. \nWhere are there compelling stories on these topics in your communities? Send us your leads and pitches for reported stories on initiatives or groups that cultivate pleasure as a possibility for transformational change. \nAll of the stories we seek will be examples of excellent journalism and storytelling: stories that are well-researched with compelling characters and that demonstrate struggle and resolution. Hurry and send your pitches to summer2022@yesmagazine.org by Jan. 23 to be considered for the summer issue. (After that\, you can continue to send them to submissions@yesmagazine.org.)

SUMMARY:PNF - The Blood Project ROLLING DEADLINE
DESCRIPTION:At its core\, the The Blood Project uses a case-based approach to blood disorders. Science and medicine are currently rooted in big data. For a given disease\, the focus is not on a single patient\, but rather on hundreds or thousands of patients that yield statistically significant results. Such studies are no doubt critical and have revolutionized medicine. But lost in the shuffle is a consideration of the individual patient\, and it is this “unit of investigation” that we wish to emphasize as a teaching device. \nIn the end\, our goal is to bring blood to life\, to share the wonders and uncover the secrets of this remarkable entity. We want you to feel and see and touch your own blood – even if metaphorically. We want you to celebrate your blood and think about it in new ways\, as a river of life that permeates you – that is you. \nLink to TBP Website \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n We welcome submissions from our users\, whether a case study\, a peripheral smear\, one or more FAQs\, an essay\, poem or creative writing piece. All submissions will be peer-reviewed\, typically by members of the TBP Advisory Board\, but also by external reviewers where appropriate. \nInstructions for submissions are found ON THIS PAGE.

The prize is now $1\,000 and publication in an upcoming issue of the journal. \nGoldstein Prize Guidelines \n1.    We accept submissions via Submittable and use its tools to ensure that all identifying information is hidden from our contest readers throughout the selection process. \n2.    We ask entrants not to include their names or contact information within the document they upload to Submittable\, its title\, or its file name. \n3.   Up to 20 submissions will be passed on\, without identifying information within them\, to the judge. \n4.   Close friends\, relatives\, students\, and former students of the judge\, are excluded from the contest. And please remember that if a poem is recognizable to the judge\, it will be disqualified.

SUMMARY:PNF - Bellevue Literary Review Seeks Submissions About "Recovery"
DESCRIPTION:Bellevue Literary Review Seeks Submissions About Recovery \n\nDeadline: December 31\, 2021\n\n\n\n\nBellevue Literary Review is seeking poetry\, fiction\, and nonfiction for a special issue devoted to Recovery\, which has become more dimensional than ever as we grapple with the fallout from medical disasters\, environmental catastrophe\, economic devastation\, and political upheaval. \n\nAre we capable of bouncing back from our isolation?\nCan we recuperate from our depression and disunity?\nHow will our children grow up in the wake of such upheaval?\nIs true “recovery” even achievable?\n\nWe all need to read these writings. Especially now. Deadline: December 31. blreview.org/submit \n\n\nThe BLR seeks high-caliber\, unpublished work\, broadly and creatively related to our themes of health\, healing\, illness\, the mind\, and the body. We encourage you to read BLR before you submit. General submissions are accepted year-round. The annual BLR Literary Prizes are open for submission March through July each year.\n\n\n\n\nFiction: We seek character-driven fiction with original voices and strong settings. We do not publish genre fiction (romance\, sci-fi\, horror). We have only occasionally published flash fiction. While we are always interested in creative explorations in style\, we do lean toward classic short stories.\nNonfiction: We are looking for essays that reach beyond the standard ‘illness narrative’ to develop a topic in an engaging and original manner. Incorporate engaging and creative analysis that allows anecdotes to serve a larger purpose. (Please\, no academic discourses or works with footnotes. )\nPoetry: We encourage poems that are accessible to a wide audience. Characteristics we look for are vivid writing\, strong narrative\, and rendering the familiar new. We encourage you to peruse back issues in our archive to get a sense of our ethos.

SUMMARY:Scholarly - Special issue on Black Health and anti-Black racism in health care in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Anti-Black racism is a threat to public and population health in Canada. Scholars and researchers in social and health sciences have been studying and documenting the effects of anti-Black racism and its impact on health inequities in Canada for decades\, yet systemic racism has undermined the publication of this work. In 2020\, CMAJ entered into conversation with Dr. Onye Nnorom and Dr. OmiSoore Dryden\, the co-leads of the Black Health Education Collaborative\, regarding ways to increase publications focusing on Black health and anti-Black racism in health care\, resulting in this call for papers on a special issue. \nCMAJ has been part of the system that has marginalized work related to the outcome of anti-Black racism on health. It’s time for Canada’s national medical journal to right this wrong. \nCMAJ recognizes the need to increase spaces that welcome research and best practice debate led by Black scholars for the wellbeing of Black communities. As such CMAJ will be devoting a special issue to the theme of Black health and anti-Black racism in health in Canada in the second quarter of 2022. Our intent is to centre the scholarship of Black authors\, including Black learners. \nWe invite submissions of high quality\, scholarly articles on topics related to the theme\, including but not limited to \n\nThe role colonial medicine has played in reproducing anti-Black racism in North America\nHow to address Black people’s differential access to a broad range of health care services in Canada (including\, but not limited to\, the areas of obstetric care\, pain management\, preventive health care and mental health services)\nHealth inequities: Black health disparities and how systemic anti-Black racism has resulted in differential/inequitable health outcomes for Black Canadians\n#BlackInMedicine\, describing the lived experiences of Black learners and practitioners in the field of medicine in Canada\nHow to address differential access to medical education for Black people in Canada\, and ways to combat racism in medical education\nAddressing racial profiling and racist treatment of Black patients and Black health care workers in the health care system\nAddressing anti-Black racism in public health responses\nAnti-Black racism in carceral systems and its relationship with health including mental health\n\nTo plan and shape the issue\, CMAJ has formed a working group comprised of external experts and editors. Members of the working group are \n\nDr. OmiSoore Dryden\, James R. Johnston Chair\, Black Canadian Studies\, Faculty of Medicine\, Dalhousie University\, Co-Lead\, Black Health Education Collaborative\nDr. Notisha Massaquoi\, assistant professor\, Department of Health and Society\, University of Toronto Scarborough\nDr. Mojola Omole\, surgical oncologist and journalist in Ontario\nMs. Camille Orridge\, senior fellow\, Wellesley Institute\nDr. Bukola Salami\, associate editor at CMAJ and Associate Professor of Nursing\, University of Alberta\nMs. Erin Russell\, senior editor at CMAJ\nDr. Andreas Laupacis\, senior deputy editor at CMAJ\nDr. Kirsten Patrick\, interim editor-in-chief at CMAJ\n\nSubmissions should be received by the end of 2021 to be considered for the special issue. Authors should please submit via CMAJ’s manuscript submission platform. \nGeneral guidance for authors of CMAJ articles can be found on the Submissions Guidelines page. \nStudents who are interested in submitting are strongly encouraged to work with their supervisor. \nMore specific instructions for the preparation of articles in the categories Research\, Commentary\, Analysis\, Practice\, Review and Humanities is also available. \nSubmissions considered potentially suitable for the issue will undergo peer review. Note that articles not chosen for the special issue will not be rejected automatically; they may be considered via usual processes for publication in a regular issue of CMAJ. \nIf you have an idea for a submission and are not sure whether it would fit we encourage you to send a detailed proposal or abstract for the working group to consider. Please send all proposals to  CMAJGroup@cmaj.ca and not to individual members of the working group. \nThe working group is committed to capacity-building and development. As such\, CMAJ editors may consider offering a webinar for potential if interest exists. If you are interested in attending a session on how to prepare a paper for publication in CMAJ please email CMAJGroup@cmaj.ca to declare your interest.
