SUMMARY:PNF - Bellevue Literary Review Seeks Submissions About "Recovery"
DESCRIPTION:Bellevue Literary Review Seeks Submissions About Recovery \n\nDeadline: December 31\, 2021\n\n\n\n\nBellevue Literary Review is seeking poetry\, fiction\, and nonfiction for a special issue devoted to Recovery\, which has become more dimensional than ever as we grapple with the fallout from medical disasters\, environmental catastrophe\, economic devastation\, and political upheaval. \n\nAre we capable of bouncing back from our isolation?\nCan we recuperate from our depression and disunity?\nHow will our children grow up in the wake of such upheaval?\nIs true “recovery” even achievable?\n\nWe all need to read these writings. Especially now. Deadline: December 31. blreview.org/submit \n\n\nThe BLR seeks high-caliber\, unpublished work\, broadly and creatively related to our themes of health\, healing\, illness\, the mind\, and the body. We encourage you to read BLR before you submit. General submissions are accepted year-round. The annual BLR Literary Prizes are open for submission March through July each year.\n\n\n\n\nFiction: We seek character-driven fiction with original voices and strong settings. We do not publish genre fiction (romance\, sci-fi\, horror). We have only occasionally published flash fiction. While we are always interested in creative explorations in style\, we do lean toward classic short stories.\nNonfiction: We are looking for essays that reach beyond the standard ‘illness narrative’ to develop a topic in an engaging and original manner. Incorporate engaging and creative analysis that allows anecdotes to serve a larger purpose. (Please\, no academic discourses or works with footnotes. )\nPoetry: We encourage poems that are accessible to a wide audience. Characteristics we look for are vivid writing\, strong narrative\, and rendering the familiar new. We encourage you to peruse back issues in our archive to get a sense of our ethos.

SUMMARY:Scholarly - Special issue on Black Health and anti-Black racism in health care in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Anti-Black racism is a threat to public and population health in Canada. Scholars and researchers in social and health sciences have been studying and documenting the effects of anti-Black racism and its impact on health inequities in Canada for decades\, yet systemic racism has undermined the publication of this work. In 2020\, CMAJ entered into conversation with Dr. Onye Nnorom and Dr. OmiSoore Dryden\, the co-leads of the Black Health Education Collaborative\, regarding ways to increase publications focusing on Black health and anti-Black racism in health care\, resulting in this call for papers on a special issue. \nCMAJ has been part of the system that has marginalized work related to the outcome of anti-Black racism on health. It’s time for Canada’s national medical journal to right this wrong. \nCMAJ recognizes the need to increase spaces that welcome research and best practice debate led by Black scholars for the wellbeing of Black communities. As such CMAJ will be devoting a special issue to the theme of Black health and anti-Black racism in health in Canada in the second quarter of 2022. Our intent is to centre the scholarship of Black authors\, including Black learners. \nWe invite submissions of high quality\, scholarly articles on topics related to the theme\, including but not limited to \n\nThe role colonial medicine has played in reproducing anti-Black racism in North America\nHow to address Black people’s differential access to a broad range of health care services in Canada (including\, but not limited to\, the areas of obstetric care\, pain management\, preventive health care and mental health services)\nHealth inequities: Black health disparities and how systemic anti-Black racism has resulted in differential/inequitable health outcomes for Black Canadians\n#BlackInMedicine\, describing the lived experiences of Black learners and practitioners in the field of medicine in Canada\nHow to address differential access to medical education for Black people in Canada\, and ways to combat racism in medical education\nAddressing racial profiling and racist treatment of Black patients and Black health care workers in the health care system\nAddressing anti-Black racism in public health responses\nAnti-Black racism in carceral systems and its relationship with health including mental health\n\nTo plan and shape the issue\, CMAJ has formed a working group comprised of external experts and editors. Members of the working group are \n\nDr. OmiSoore Dryden\, James R. Johnston Chair\, Black Canadian Studies\, Faculty of Medicine\, Dalhousie University\, Co-Lead\, Black Health Education Collaborative\nDr. Notisha Massaquoi\, assistant professor\, Department of Health and Society\, University of Toronto Scarborough\nDr. Mojola Omole\, surgical oncologist and journalist in Ontario\nMs. Camille Orridge\, senior fellow\, Wellesley Institute\nDr. Bukola Salami\, associate editor at CMAJ and Associate Professor of Nursing\, University of Alberta\nMs. Erin Russell\, senior editor at CMAJ\nDr. Andreas Laupacis\, senior deputy editor at CMAJ\nDr. Kirsten Patrick\, interim editor-in-chief at CMAJ\n\nSubmissions should be received by the end of 2021 to be considered for the special issue. Authors should please submit via CMAJ’s manuscript submission platform. \nGeneral guidance for authors of CMAJ articles can be found on the Submissions Guidelines page. \nStudents who are interested in submitting are strongly encouraged to work with their supervisor. \nMore specific instructions for the preparation of articles in the categories Research\, Commentary\, Analysis\, Practice\, Review and Humanities is also available. \nSubmissions considered potentially suitable for the issue will undergo peer review. Note that articles not chosen for the special issue will not be rejected automatically; they may be considered via usual processes for publication in a regular issue of CMAJ. \nIf you have an idea for a submission and are not sure whether it would fit we encourage you to send a detailed proposal or abstract for the working group to consider. Please send all proposals to  CMAJGroup@cmaj.ca and not to individual members of the working group. \nThe working group is committed to capacity-building and development. As such\, CMAJ editors may consider offering a webinar for potential if interest exists. If you are interested in attending a session on how to prepare a paper for publication in CMAJ please email CMAJGroup@cmaj.ca to declare your interest.

SUMMARY:PFN - The Antagonish Review's Call for Submissions\, Rolling Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\n\n\nPoetry \n1. TAR is open to poetry on any subject written from any point of view and in any form. However\, writers should expect their work to be considered within the full context of old and new poetry in English and other languages. \n2. The amount of space TAR can devote to any one writer is usually limited to 5-6 pages at a maximum. \n3. No more than 6-8 poems should be submitted at any one time. A preferable submission would be from 3-4 poems. Submitting more than 8 tends to conceal the merits of individual poems. The poet should also know\, fairly clearly\, what is or is not good work and send only that. \n4. Poets should wait for response to a submission before submitting again. \nPLEASE NOTE we do not accept submissions which have been previously published in any format. \n  \nFiction \n1. Submission should be typed\, double spaced\, author’s last name on each page\, and can range in length from 500 to 3\,000 words. Any submissions longer than 3\,000 words are not likely to be accepted. \n2. No more than 1 story should be sent at any one time. Writers should wait for a response before submitting again. \n3. The Antigonish Review prefers not to consider fiction that has been submitted elsewhere (multiple submissions). \n4. Normally we do not publish sections of novels and we do not publish plays or scripts. \n5. We attempt to respond within two to four months. \nPLEASE NOTE we do not accept submissions which have been previously published in any format. \n  \nNon-Fiction / Essays \nTravel sketches\, personal memoirs\, writing about sports\, culture\, history\, or other essays which fall under the general rubric of creative non-fiction\, are welcome. Accompanying photographs may be considered. \nSerious scholarly works\, interviews with Canadian literati\, and the like will be considered from time to time\, but those too narrow in scope or written in specialized jargon are better placed in a targeted academic\, refereed\, or professional journal. \nMost of the essays we publish run from 1000 to 4000 words. \nWe do not accept submissions which have been previously published in any format. \nPlease submit only one essay at a time.

Our submission periods are September 15th to December 15th\, and January 15th to April 15th. \nWe recommend considering the page count of your work before submitting. (Please do not send more than six poems in a single submission.) Prose should be typed\, double-spaced on one side. Cross-genre work or any work that is unusually formatted is welcome\, but please be aware that our page width and font size are restricted. If you are submitting through our online system\, we prefer Microsoft Word documents (.doc or .docx). \nRESPONSE TIME: \nApproximately 2 – 4 months \nWITHDRAWAL:  \nProse: please click “remove” on the submission manager to delete the entire document. \nPoetry: please click “activity” on the submission to add a note indicating which poem you would like withdrawn from consideration. \nThe Editors’ Prize For Nonfiction \nYou may submit one essay per submission. Prose should be typed\, double-spaced\, and be no longer than 20 pages. \nWinner receives a $1000 Prize and publication in New Ohio Review 31. \nSubmissions for this contest are “Concealed\,” meaning that NOR staffers and the judge will not know the identity of the submitter. Please exclude your contact information from your actual submission–including name\, email address\, and mailing address. \nPieces that are not selected will still be considered for publication in print and online. \nThe Editors’ Prize For Fiction \nYou may submit one story per submission. For this reason\, we are happy to announce the 3rd annual “NORward Prize.”  \nThis prize will be judged by a group of our past poetry contributors. \nThe winner will receive a $1\,000 Prize and publication in New Ohio Review 31. \nAdditionally\, any poem that receives a first-place vote from one of our judges is guaranteed to be published on newohioreview.org. These will be “Honorable Mentions in the NORward Prize.” \nPieces that are not selected by our judges will still be considered for publication in our print issues (and our online editions). \nThe contest will be judged “concealed\,” meaning NOR staffers and contest judges will not know the identities of the entrants. Please exclude your contact information from your actual submission–including name\, email address\, and mailing address. \nYou may submit up to 6 single-spaced pages of poetry per submission entry. \nGood luck.

SUMMARY:P - Submissions to Vallum 19:1 are now open! Theme: "Bridges."
DESCRIPTION:The ability to move oneself towards future possibilities and potentials brings us to bridges\, to principles of connection. Our current social and mental states can often seem to function on the premise of fragmentation\, with past and present chaos always sweeping away a moment of coming together. The bridging of gaps and grounding in the wake instability is crucial to our personal\, and collective\, well-being. We’re looking for poetry that speaks about these fractures and uncertainties\, and/or about our abilities to overcome them\, to build bridges. \nOur call is open to poems\, essays\, reviews\, interviews\, as well as audio or video peoms. Read more details on hot to submit through our Submittable! \nVallum is interested in original and previously unpublished work. Ideal submissions are well-crafted\, fresh and edgy. We are committed to enriching and continuing the tradition of poetry in the present day. We welcome submissions that deepen our understanding of what poetry is and can be. We are open to most styles\, whether experimental or traditional – though issues are usually put together with an underlying theme in mind\, so not all poetry can be accepted\, even if it is genius! \nSubmission fee: We charge a minimum fee of $3 per submission when submitting online. We use this fee to help cover reading fees and printing costs. Any donation of $10 or greater will be issued a charitable receipt. If this amount presents a barrier to your ability to submit\, please contact submission@vallummag.com. \nSimultaneous submissions are acceptable as long as submissions are withdrawn from Submittable in a timely manner. If your work has been published in our most recent issue\, please wait one issue before submitting again\, at which point we will be happy to consider more of your work \nSubmissions are accepted through Submittable only. We do not accept mailed submissions. \nWe pay our contributors!

SUMMARY:NP - Farmer-ish: Farmers Write
DESCRIPTION:Farmer-ish is a journal dedicated to all things farmer–with a literary and educational slant. This journal is the culmination of my life’s work as a writing teacher\, writer\, and farmer. In the pages of this journal\, you will find coverage for everything from raising chickens to jam recipes to poetry about farming and Nature. In difficult times like these\, many are finding themselves more interested in growing food\, becoming makers\, and living more connectedly to Nature and their local farming communities. Our goal is to provide engaging and educational essays and how-to pieces for those interested in doing things like raising chickens\, gardening\, canning\, and sewing. Along the way\, we will offer poetry\, photography\, and creative nonfiction\, making Farmer-ish a journal that lives in between farming and the arts–a place we know so well here on Sands End Farm in beautiful Maine. \nCountry of Publication & Year Established\n\n\n\n United States\nEstablished in 2020\n\n\n\n\n\nPublication Medium & Frequency\n\n\n\nEElectronic Publication\nElectronic Publication\nPublished 4 x per year.\n\n\n\n\n\nNonfiction OPEN\n\n\nRolling Submissions:\n\nNext cutoff date is 10 December 2021* (approx. 23 days from now).Track 1\n\nAudience:\nOpen to a broad Audience.\nStyles:\nOpen to all/most Styles\, including: Literary\, Mainstream\, Personal.\nTopics:\nAgriculture/Agricultural Sciences (General\, Animal husbandry\, See guidelines)\, Lifestyle (Cooking\, Mind-body-spirit)\, Literature/Books (Theory/Analysis/Criticism\, See guidelines)\, Nature/Environment\, Other (See guidelines).\nTheme(s):\n\n\n\n\nTHEME\nDEADLINE\nTRACK\n\n\n\n\nFarmers Write\n10 Dec 2021*\nTrack 2\n\n\n\n\nTypes/Lengths:\n\n\n\n\nTYPE\nLENGTH DETAILS\n\n\n\n\nVReview Review\nNo specific word count limits known.\n\n\nYEssay Essay\nUp to 1\,000 words.\n\n\nZNarrative Nonfiction Narrative Nonfiction\n1\,000 – 2\,000 words.\n\n\n\n\nPayscale:\nWe list broad pay categories rather than payment specifics. SUMMARY:PFN - CHESTNUT REVIEW (“for stubborn artists”) Invites Submissions Year Round
DESCRIPTION:We appreciate stories in every genre we publish. All issues free online which illustrates what we have liked\, but we are always ready to be surprised by the new! \nGenre-specific Guidelines \n\nPoetry: Submit up to six poems (three for free submissions). Length and format are open. Poems should be single-spaced. Begin each poem on a new page\, and clearly indicate when a poem extends beyond one page. There are no absolute length limits\, but remember that the longer a poem\, the better it has to be. We strongly dislike submissions that consist of only one poem. \nFlash: Submit one piece of no more than 1000 words. We do accept micros\, and we publish both fiction and creative nonfiction. Please only send one piece at a time regardless of length. Flash submissions are free. \nProse: Submit one piece of between 1000 and 5000 words. Prose submissions can be works of fiction or nonfiction. We do not accept excerpts of longer works. \nWe never solicit written submissions—all come through Submittable. Please do not email us submissions; they will go unread. We occasionally solicit art submissions\, primarily from DeviantArt. \nStaff submissions. No past or present staff member of CHESTNUT REVIEW may have their work appear in the magazine. \nMinimum age. All those who submit work must be at least 18 years of age. \nUnpublished work only. We only accept unpublished work that has not appeared in any publicly-accessible form previously\, including online.

SUMMARY:PNF - Puerto del Sol Seeks Writing on Water
DESCRIPTION:For over half a century\, Puerto del Sol has been dedicated to provide a forum for inventive and fresh prose\, poetry\, reviews\, criticism\, and artwork; and we strive to publish voices from emerging and established writers and artists. Most importantly\, we pride ourselves in not following a standardized aesthetic—instead\, we seek work that presents authenticity\, sincerity\, and respect. We recommend reading our most current issue or works from our online journal to get a sense of the content we have published recently. Thank you for your interest in our magazine\, and we look forward to reading your work. \nPuerto del Sol seeks work which engages with water in all its forms. Life and growth and blood and poison and drought and commodity. Snow and steam and tsunami. We want to read work as sharp and brittle as ice. We want stories\, essays\, and poems which drip from dew-soaked branches or crash like waterfalls. Show us something as vast as the sea or as small as a single droplet of acid rain. Send us your explorations of fluidity\, of the ways things shift and change\, and of things which cannot be held\, no matter how hard we try.
