While the theme and title of this issue is ‘Do You Smell Burning?’ we encourage you to interpret it creatively. \nOur favourite poems are the unexpected kind. DESCRIPTION:NonBinary Review is open for submissions on the theme of “world tour.” From the first migration of our ancestors out of Africa to the globe trotting of the jet set\, our planet and our culture have been shaped by people traveling vast distances. Some traveled for survival\, some for wealth\, some for power\, and some traveled to satisfy their curiosity. We’re looking for stories about epic journeys over vast distances with many destinations. We’re looking for travels that have changed the way people have viewed their world. We’re looking for travels that have broadened the outlook\, not just of the traveler\, but of civilization. \nWe’re not looking for personal travelogues\, unless you’re Columbus\, Magellan\, etc.\, in which case\, we have some questions. We’re also not looking for stories of family’s moves to the new world. We also don’t want interplanetary travel-type science fiction. \nWe have different teams evaluating poetry and prose. If you submit to the wrong genre\, your submission will be declined.  All submissions must have a clear relationship to our theme and be submitted in 12pt Times New Roman\, or they will be rejected. \nPoetry: NonBinary Review pays a $10 flat fee for poetry and you may include up to THREE poems may be included per submission\, but each must be a separate file.\nProse: NonBinary Review pays 1¢ per word for prose with a limit of 3000 words.

DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\nUpdated November 2\, 2022 \n\n\nWe love that writers around the world are inspired by our first lines\, and we know that not every story will be sent to us. However\, we ask that you do not submit stories starting with our first lines to other journals (or post them online on public sites) until we’ve notified you as to our decision (usually four weeks after the deadline). When the entire premise of the publication revolves around one sentence\, we don’t want it to look as if we stole that sentence from another writer. If you have questions\, feel free to drop us a line. \nAlso\, we understand that writers may add our first line to a story they are currently working on or have already completed\, and that’s cool. But please do not add our first line to a previously published story and submit it to us. We do not accept previously published stories\, even if they have been repurposed for our first lines. And\, just to be clear\, we do not accept simultaneous submissions. \nOne more thing while I’ve got you here: Writers compete against one another for magazine space\, so\, technically\, every literary magazine is running a contest. There are\, however\, literary magazines that run traditional contests\, where they charge entry fees and rank the winners. We do not – nor will we ever – charge a submission fee\, nor do we rank our stories in order of importance. Occasionally\, we run contests to help come up with new first lines\, or we run fun\, gimmicky competitions for free stuff\, but the actual journal is not a contest in the traditional sense. \nFiction: All stories must be written with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way\, unless otherwise noted by the editors. The story should be between 300 and 5\,000 words (this is more like a guideline and not a hard-and-fast rule; going over or under the word count won’t get your story tossed from the slush pile). The sentences can be found on the home page of The First Line’s website\, as well as in the prior issue. Note: We are open to all genres. We try to make TFL as eclectic as possible. \nPoetry: We do accept poetry\, though rarely. We have no restrictions on form or line count\, but all poems must begin with the first line provided. DESCRIPTION:Even as the conditions for human life on earth destabilize\, even as ecosystems collapse\, and bodies both human and nonhuman are uprooted from their homelands\, even as technologies enable and encourage unprecedented forms of disconnection\, human bodies are rediscovering old ways—and finding new and remarkable ways—to come into relation with place. In the last decade especially\, we’ve gained an enormous amount of scientific knowledge about trees\, about the mycelial realm\, about the waters\, about our atmosphere and cosmos.  And in many cases\, it’s been accompanied by a willingness to listen in ways that\, except for indigenous peoples\, we have not done before. \nIssue #17 (Deadline: August 4\, 2023) will once again center on the question of human bodies in (and out of) place. What brings us into profound relation to place—and what pulls us out? In a social world that feels less and less place-dependent\, and a physical world that is being reconfigured by climate change and habitat loss\, how do we sustain our connection to physical place? How does being in profound relation to place change everything between\, around and about us? \nSUBMISSION GUIDELINES\nDark Matter: Women Witnessing publishes writing created in response to an age of massive species loss and ecological collapse. It is a home for dreams\, visions\, and communications with the nonhuman world\, especially those with messages for how we might begin to heal our broken relationship to the earth. We welcome writing in all forms and genres. All poetry and fiction must be accompanied by notes bridging to the journal’s mission. Context and commentary are required for dreams\, visions\, and other communications. DESCRIPTION:Form Poetry \nThe next issue’s theme is form poetry. The choice is yours\, but you must “specify” the form under the title of your poem. For instance\, if you write a sonnet\, tell us it is a Shakespearean Sonnet\, Modern Sonnet\, etc. (Any sonnet\, including “modern\,” must have 14 lines.) Or if you write a version of the ghazal\, name the type of ghazal\, such as “modern” ghazal. The same goes for all other form poem categories\, including the examples below: \nBlank verse (rather than Free verse) \nSonnet (no matter the type you choose\, it must have 14 lines) \nEpic \nHaiku \nSenru \nVillanelle \nGhazal \nQuatrain \nRondel \nOde \nBallad \nWriting form poetry is a great way to hone your technique. If you don’t typically practice forms\, you may want to draft a few now\, well before the next deadline. \nRemember\, specify the exact form you have chosen for each submission and place it under the poem’s title. If it is a “modern” sonnet\, say so\, don’t simply name it a sonnet.
