SUMMARY:N - Speak For Ourselves Essay Competition - Educational Institution Students
DESCRIPTION:The contest is open to Canadian citizens aged 25 and younger who are enrolled in or are attending an accredited secondary or post-secondary institution in 2021 or 2022. \nOTTAWA\, ON (September 27\, 2021): For Canadian students and young people who are frustrated that they don’t see themselves represented in the national discussion on issues of race\, culture and politics\, here is a great opportunity to finally be heard. \nIn Canada\, the dominant mainstream media narrative seems to offer a single\, simplistic\, politically-biased view to represent all people of colour on the most important political and cultural issues. But true diversity includes diversity of thought\, and in this respect\, minority communities are as diverse as any other communities in our country. \nTo help Canadian youth of different backgrounds create a national discussion that reflects the true diversity of opinions that we know is out there\, the Macdonald-Laurier Institute is launching the first ever Speak For Ourselves Essay Competition. \nThis competition will invite essays from Canadian students that push back against the prevailing narratives that are imposed upon or seek to marginalize diverse voices. The contest winner will receive a $1500 prize\, mentorship support\, and will have their essay featured in MLI’s Inside Policy magazine. As part of this contest\, MLI will also host a writing workshop\, mentorship roundtables\, and Instagram Live discussions for young Canadians. \n“A diversity of opinions from individuals with different backgrounds represents a strong measure of a successful democracy\,” said MLI Senior Fellow Jamil Jivani\, who also recorded a video message announcing the contest. “Young Canadians deserve to be heard\, especially those whose opinions are often left out of public debate.” \nThis essay competition is part of MLI’s Speak for Ourselves project\, which seeks to amplify the views of people of colour whose dissent from mainstream narratives might leave them without a platform for expressing their opinions. Launched in 2020\, Speak for Ourselves embodies the principle that all people are unique and entitled to think and speak for themselves without having ideas imposed onto them. \nAccording to MLI Munk Senior Fellow Shuvaloy Majumdar\, “supporting true diversity and inclusion is much more important than succumbing to the narrow ‘culture war’ debate being perpetuated in much of society.” \nThe contest is now open\, and essays can be submitted between now and November 29th at 11:59pm ET. Eligible participation is open to Canadian students aged 25 and younger. Essays can be anywhere between 750 and 1000 words in length. \nAs Jivani notes\, successful submissions will be those that provide “a unique and compelling argument or commentary on issues of race\, racism\, and diversity – the kind of argument you might not read in the opinion sections of Canada’s major papers or in a university classroom.” \nTo learn more about the essay contest\, a full list of rules\, requirements\, and key information can be found here. \nCommenting on the essay competition\, MLI Senior Fellow Kaveh Shahrooz says that it “presents an opportunity to reward a bright and talented young Canadian whose views and opinions deserve their time in the spotlight.” \nIn addition to the essay competition\, MLI will be hosting a digital writers’ workshop to discuss ideas and best practices for prospective participants. To register for the workshop\, click here. \nFurthermore\, media\, educational institutions\, and prospective participants are invited to contact: \nBrett Byers\nCommunications and Digital Media Manager \nhttps://www.macdonaldlaurier.ca/speak-essay-competition-contest-rules/

SUMMARY:P - Pedestal 89: Call For Submissions
DESCRIPTION:As editors of Pedestal Magazine\, we intend to support both established and burgeoning writers. We are committed to promoting artistic diversity and celebrating the voice of the individual. \nPedestal Magazine does not accept previously published work\, unless specifically requested; however\, we will accept simultaneous submissions\, if so noted. Please inform us immediately if your submission is accepted elsewhere. We do not accept submissions by regular mail. Neither do we accept email submissions. We now accept all work through Submittable.com. Please do not submit more than once per reading cycle. \nCurrent and Upcoming Guidelines:\nFor Pedestal 89\, scheduled for publication in December 2021\, editors will be accepting submissions of poetry. No restrictions on theme\, style\, length\, or genre. Please submit up to five (5) poems and include all work in a single file.\nOpen for submissions: November 1 – November 28\nPayment: $50 per accepted poem. \nPedestal Magazine publishes reviews of full-length poetry collections (we are no longer able to review chapbooks). Most of our reviews are selected and handled in-house by staff reviewers; however\, if you are interested in submitting a title for possible review\, or would like to review a specific title\, please query at pedmagazine@carolina.rr.com. \nHow to Submit Your Writing:\nAs mentioned above\, Pedestal Magazine does not accept previously published material\, unless specifically requested. The editors ask for first rights to any piece selected. At the time of publication\, all rights revert back to the author/artist; however\, Pedestal Magazine retains the right to publish the piece(s) in any subsequent issue or anthology\, whether in print or online\, without additional payment. Should you decide to republish the piece elsewhere\, we ask that you cite Pedestal Magazine as a place of previous publication and provide Pedestal Magazine’s web address. \nStarting with Issue 84\, Pedestal Magazine increased payment for accepted work from $40 to $50 per poem. In addition\, pay rates have been increased for editors and reviewers. Also\, because the amount of submissions received has dramatically increased over the last few submission cycles\, we are encountering rising administrative costs\, including fees related to use of the Submittable and MailChimp platforms. For these reasons\, we have implemented a $3 processing fee for all submissions. \nWe do our best to respond to submissions in 4-6 weeks. Please do not query regarding status of a submission until at least 8 weeks have passed. All questions pertaining to submissions should be addressed to the editor at pedmagazine@carolina.rr.com.

SUMMARY:P - Harpur Palate - Poetry
DESCRIPTION:The entry fee includes a one-year subscription to Harpur Palate. \nHarpur Palate accepts original\, previously unpublished poems in any style\, form\, or genre. We accept submissions of 1-5 poems per reading period–no more than 15 pages total. Please send no more than one poetry submission per reading period. We prefer poems with a strong lyric voice and sense of urgency. Simultaneous submissions are accepted as long as you withdraw your piece immediately should it be accepted elsewhere. \nAesthetic statement from Co-Editors Cole Depuy and Macaulay Glynn:  “We are looking for poems with fresh perspectives that surprise us\, poems that draw us in and make of us commiserators or co-conspirators. Our favorite poems have a strong lyric voice and a sense of urgency that drives the poem forward toward a conclusion that feels simultaneously inevitable and unexpected. That urgency can derive from the speaker’s audibly intense desire to communicate or a sense of play\, tracking the speaker’s ideas as they move associatively and intuitively from one to the next. We love poems that dive deeply into the speaker’s psychological response to a situation\, idea\, or what Richard Hugo calls the “triggering subject.” We love poems that dramatize the brain’s work of making meaning. Some contemporary poets we love include: Kim Addonizio\, Chen Chen\, Ross Gay\, Ada Limón\, Sharon Olds\, Kay Ryan\, sam sax\, Danez Smith\, Patricia Smith\, Tracy K. Smith.”

SUMMARY:PF - Nixed Mate
DESCRIPTION:We are locked in with climate change. Should the seas rise as predicted\, our beloved navigational hazard in Boston Harbor will no longer exist except as an abandoned beacon\, the sea rolling over the bones of pirates and mutineers. \nWe are looking for work that addresses\, directly\, or indirectly\, climate change and humanity’s impact on the environment. We are not looking for solutions or predictions\, though they are welcome\, we are looking for work that reminds us that without our polluting devices we would not be who we are and how we must accept that responsibility in the best way we can. We must not be one of W.S. Merwin’s Last Ones \nThe ones that were left went away to live if it would let them.\nThey went as far as they could.\nThe lucky ones with their shadows.*\nWe are happy to have Hannah Larrabee join us as Guest Editor for this issue. Hannah’s Wonder Tissue won the Airlie Press Poetry Prize and was shortlisted for a Massachusetts Book Award. She has chapbooks out from Seven Kitchens Press and Nixes Mate. Hannah was selected by NASA to write poetry for the James Webb Space Telescope program\, and she’s a recipient of an Arctic Circle Residency. She’ll be sailing around Svalbard with artists and scientists in October. Hannah studied poetry with Charles Simic at The University of New Hampshire. (non-binary: she/they)  hannahlarrabee.com \nThe submission period for our Climate Change themed double issue Issue 21/22 · Fall/Winter 2021/22 runs August 15 – November 15. We insist that you send multiple pieces in a single file\, and\, most important\, we insist that you start a new poem\, or piece on a new page. Please add a 50-word or less bio. We allow simultaneous submissions so long as you notify us if your work has been accepted elsewhere. \nIf you have not heard from us within a reasonable amount of time (2-3 months)\, a gentle query as to the status of your submission should suffice to get our attention. \nThough\, at this time\, we can not pay anything other than our undying gratitude and appreciation\, we ask for first North American serial rights only. SUMMARY:North American Review: Kurt Vonnegut Speculative Fiction Prize
DESCRIPTION: The Vonnegut Prize is an annual fiction competition sponsored by North American Review. This award is intended to recognize the finest speculative fiction\, which can include\, but is not limited to\, work influenced by the postmodern science-fiction of Kurt Vonnegut. We love Vonnegut’s dark humor\, but please avoid mere imitation. We are enthusiastic about all work painted with speculative fiction’s broad brush: fairytale\, magical realism\, fabulism\, the fantastic\, horror\, Afro-futurism\, science fiction hard and soft\, and everything in between. The winning entry will appear in the North American Review’s annual summer fiction issue\, and all finalists will be considered for publication. \nContest Information \nOpen for submission: August 10\, 2021.\nFirst Prize: $1\,000\nDeadline: November 1st\, 2021. Results will be announced in January.\nWordcount: 500 – 12\,000 words\nJudge:  Brenda Peynado \n\nSubmissions are judged anonymously; please remove identifying information.\nCurrent University of Northern Iowa students are not eligible to submit.\nThe winner will be published in the Summer 2022 Issue. All entry fees include copy of the Summer Issue.\n\nFrequently asked questions: \n\nYou may submit novel excerpts so long as they stand alone as a complete short story with beginning\, middle\, and end.\nWe will accept flash fiction as well as works up to 10\,000 words. That said\, most of our finalists and all of our winners have had wordcounts in the 2\,500 – 7\,500 range.\nWe are interested in experimental fiction; however\, if publishing your piece would require unusual layout or formatting\, please query first.\n\nOur judging process: \n\nAll submissions are read by the contest coordinator\, Dr. Brooke Wonders/Dr. Jim O’Loughlin (alternating years)\, as well as by fifteen or more North American Review preliminary readers\, most of whom are undergraduate or graduate students at UNI. They select a slate of semifinalists\, then finalists\, from the submission pool. All finalists are sent to the prize judge.\nOur prize judge selects a winner\, runner-up\, and honorable mentions from the slate of finalists. All finalists and semifinalists will be listed in the magazine and on Open Space.\nThe contest coordinator may offer publication–in a future issue of North American Review and/or on Open Space–to notable stories\, even if they are not sent to the prize judge.\nThe winner will be published in the Summer 2022 Issue.\nAll entry fees include a copy of the Summer Issue.

No fee is required for submissions to this issue. \nThe theme for this issue is Return. As in\, to return to a former place\, person\, or situation. Please withdraw your submission immediately  upon acceptance elsewhere. \nAuthors whose work is selected for this special feature will receive a  small honorarium ($25 per poem\, $75 per story or essay) and a  complimentary 2-year subscription to Ninth Letter \n* \nGENERAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES (PRINT EDITION)  \n  \nNinth Letter is accepting submissions of fiction\, poetry\, and essays for our print edition from September 1 to February 28 (postmark dates). Please note our fee schedule as follows: \nSeptember and October: $3.00 per submission \nNovember and December: no submission fee required \nJanuary and February: $3.00 per submission \nNinth Letter is published semi-annually in print at the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign. For fiction and nonfiction\, please send only one story or one essay at a time\, or up to three pieces of flash prose\, up to 8\,000 words. \nPlease do not send a second submission until you have received a response to the first. All mailed submissions must include an SASE for reply; we recommend a stamped business-sized envelope. If you wish to have your manuscript returned\, you must include adequate postage and a properly sized envelope\, and indicate such in your cover letter. We will recycle all unreturned manuscripts. \nYou should hear from us regarding your submission within 16 weeks; if you haven’t heard from us in that time you are welcome to query about the status of your manuscript at info@ninthletter.com. \nWe can only review two submissions per author per reading period; if you have submitted twice before the end of the reading period\, please do not submit again unless solicited to do so by an editor. \nFor material accepted to our print edition\, Ninth Letter pays $25 per printed page\, with a maximum payment of $150\, as well as two complimentary copies of the issue in which the work appears. SUMMARY:P - Speckled Trout Review
DESCRIPTION:Speckled Trout Review is an independent literary magazine. We like good storytelling in poems metaphorically rich and ripe with imagery\, poems in which every word counts\, poems that look like poems. Good rhythm is nice\, too. However\, abstract is not our thing; neither is overt political stuff. Appalachian poets are welcome here\, in addition to many other subjects\, styles\, and work from poets spanning the globe. \n  \nSubmission Guidelines\nCall for submissions: Fall 2021 (3.2) Childhood memories (print issue)Submission window opens September 1\, closing November 1. \nWe often have a penchant to wax nostalgic about our childhood memories or a desire to idealize them. However\, the reality is more measured. We know that we may carry these formative recollections\, visceral and vivid\, with us throughout our lives\, even as we perceive them to be warm and nourishing or perhaps frightening. We want poems that leave the front porch and go beyond the trees. \nEditors of Speckled Trout Review welcome submissions of unpublished poetry (nothing previously published in an electronic publication of any kind or in print) for its Fall 2021 (3.2) print issue. Poets can paste up to 4 poems\, followed by a 50-word writer’s biography and mailing address\, in the body of an e-mail to speckledtroutreview@hotmail.com. Please note: attachments will go unread. Poems with overt political messages are not for Speckled Trout Review. Simultaneous submissions are fine\, but please share the good news when a poem finds a home elsewhere. For any questions about submissions or Speckled Trout Review\, reach out to us at the above e-mail address. Poets whose work is selected for Fall 2021 (3.2) will receive a complimentary copy of the issue. \nFor contributors whose work appears in either a fall or spring issue\, we ask poets acknowledge Speckled Trout Review as the original publisher of the poem(s) in any subsequent publication thereafter. We reserve the right to archive accepted poems on the Speckled Trout Review website indefinitely and to publish work in a future anthology.

SUMMARY:F - CBC Short Story Prize
DESCRIPTION:Short Story (up to 2\,500 words; fiction)*\nCompetition opens: September 1\, 2021 \nDeadline: October 31\, 2021 \n*(Word count includes all words contained in the work including but not limited to titles\, footnotes\, introductions\, etc. Submissions over the specified word count will be disqualified.) \nOur word limits are strict in each category. To calculate word counts\, we put your entire submission (including the title) into Microsoft Word and use Word’s word counter. Since Word only relies on spaces to delimit words\, any term containing a hyphen (“twenty-five”) or an apostrophe (“can’t”\, “don’t”) counts as a single word. Word also counts every article (“the”\, “a”\, etc.) as a separate word. Microsoft Word also automatically counts groups of characters (e.g. “xxx”) as well as symbols (e.g. “***” or “~~~”) as a word. \nParticipants may submit as many texts as they wish in one or all categories. A writer can win only one prize per category. Each text may be submitted to only one category. \nFor each manuscript entered\, participants must complete a separate official entry form and pay the entry fee. \nParticipants must verify the exact deadlines on the cbcbooks.ca website. Please note that CBC/Radio-Canada is permitted to modify these deadlines at any time. \nOnline submission: all works must be submitted and payments must be made on or before 11:59 PM (ET) on the day of the deadline. \nWinners will be announced approximately six months after the deadline for each competition. \nHOW TO SUBMIT\nAll submissions must: \n\nBe submitted online by creating an account through Submittable. Submittable is an external site designated by CBC/Radio-Canada to manage the submissions to the competition. They adhere to CBC’s privacy policy.\nBe accompanied by the official entry form and the parental permission (electronic or print version) if applicable\nBe submitted anonymously: the name of the entrant must not appear anywhere on the text to ensure the objectivity of the jury\nBe submitted in Word or Wordpad (.doc\, .rtf or .docx) format\, in letter format (8½” by 11”)\nBe double spaced\, except for poetry texts\nBe in a legible font and font size\nBe submitted to the correct category during the entry period for that category\n\nIf you are unable to submit your content online\, please contact the CBC Literary Prizes team to obtain an alternate form of entry. \nRestrictions: \n\nAll submissions are final: no changes or substitutions are allowed\nNo handwritten manuscripts or fax texts will be accepted\nTexts will not be returned and editorial comments will not be given on the works\n\nFees: \nA fee of $25.00 (taxes included) for administration purposes is required for each entry. The competition is 100% not-for-profit\, with all fees going towards covering administrative costs\, which include payment of readers and jurors of the competition. Participants are not eligible until payment of the registration fee has been received and cashed. The entry fee will not be refunded if your submission is ineligible. All submissions are final: entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. \nJUDGING\nWorks are judged anonymously on the basis of the participant’s use of language\, originality of subject and writing style. \nOnly the work submitted will be considered by the judges\, other documents\, images\, diagrams etc. are not eligible for consideration by the judges. \nSubmissions are processed by a two-tiered system in both languages (English\, French) by readers and jurors. \nThe initial texts are screened by readers chosen for each category from a group of qualified editors and writers across the country. Each text is read by two readers. \nThe English readers come up with a preliminary list of approximately 100 texts that are then forwarded to a second group of readers who will decide upon the approximately 30 entries that comprise the longlist and be forwarded to the jury. \nThe French readers come up with a longlist of approximately 20 texts that are forwarded to the jury. \nThe English and French juries will read all stories on the longlist and decide on a shortlist of five in each language\, which will include a first-place winner and four runners-up. The members of the jury (three per category) are composed of eminent writers and editors from the Canadian literary community. \nEvery effort is made to achieve a balance of gender and diversity in the readers and judges and to reflect regional differences and trends. The readers and jurors change every year and are based in different areas of the country. \nJurors and readers in each category will be chosen by CBC/Radio-Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Banff Centre. \nAll decisions by the readers and the jury are final (subject to meeting any conditions and eligibility criteria as determined by CBC). Readers’ names are confidential until the end of the competition to ensure the judging process remains blind. \nPRIZES\nCanada Council for the Arts will offer five cash prizes in each category and in each language: \n\nGrand Prize: $6\,000\nFour finalists will receive $1\,000 each\n\nMoreover\, the Grand Prize winner will receive a two-week residency at The Banff Centre approximately valued at $2\,500 which will include: \n\naccommodation and meals at The Banff Centre for two weeks;\n24-hour access to a studio; and\nopportunities to access Banff Centre events and performances for free.\n\nWinners must use their prize within two years of the prize award\, at a time mutually agreeable to the Banff Centre and the prize winner. This prize does not include travel costs to and from the residency at Banff. \nMoreover\, CBC/Radio-Canada will provide visibility to winners and their work on one or more of its platforms. \nParticipants may win only one prize per category. Participants maintain ownership of their works\, although rights to reproduce and distribute them to the public are limited by the licenses granted according to these rules. \nThe prize is not transferable and includes only what is specifically mentioned in these rules. If for any reason whatsoever\, the winner is unable to use the prize in whole or in part or is unwilling to accept or take advantage of the prize as described\, or a portion thereof\, the prize or portion thereof will be forfeited without compensation and CBC/Radio-Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts\, The Banff Centre and their affiliated companies or agents\, as well as their respective directors\, officers and employees\, will be released from all obligations toward the winner with regards to the prize or portion thereof. \nIf a prize cannot be awarded as described in these rules\, CBC/Radio-Canada\, The Banff Centre and the Canada Council for the Arts reserve the right to substitute one or more prizes or prize components with another of approximately equivalent value. \nTo be proclaimed winners or finalists\, participants must meet all the conditions and eligibility criteria set out in these rules. The winners and finalists\, or in the of case minors\, their parents or guardians\, shall provide information requested by CBC in this regard\, and shall sign a declaration of eligibility for the competition\, as set out in these rules\, and release CBC/Radio-Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts\, The Banff Centre and their affiliated companies or agents\, as well as their respective directors\, officers and employees\, from any liability for damage or loss whatsoever\, whether arising from the participants’ involvement in this competition or from the awarding\, acceptance or use of the prize. \nA winner’s refusal to accept a prize releases CBC/Radio-Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts\, The Banff Centre and their affiliated companies or agents\, as well as their respective directors\, officers and employees\, from all obligations toward the winner. \nELIGIBILITY\nTexts submitted to CBC Literary Awards must be written in English (texts written in several languages and translations are not eligible). Texts written in French must be submitted to the Prix de la création Radio-Canada. \nCanadian citizens\, whether living in Canada or abroad\, and permanent residents of Canada are eligible to enter. \n\nFor any participant who has not reached the age of majority in his/her province or country of residence\, parental or guardian consent is necessary to enter the competition. \nPeople who work for CBC/Radio-Canada\, the Canada Council for the Arts\, the Banff Center\, their affiliates\, as well as the members of the jury and the selection committee (readers)\, as well as their immediate family (father-mother\, brother-sister\, son-daughter) and people living under the same roof during the registration period of the prize are not eligible for this prize. For example\, if one of the people listed above (immediate family or person living under the same roof as one of these people) works at one of the companies listed above during the registration period for the Short Story category but is no longer in the employ of this company during the registration period for the Poetry and Nonfiction Prizes\, they could participate in the Poetry and Nonfiction Prizes but not in Short Story. \nPreviously published participants may submit texts providing that the submissions are original unpublished works. There must be only one author per entry. \nAll works that have been published or broadcast are considered not eligible for the competition. \nRIGHTS\nParticipants warrant that the work they are submitting is an original and unpublished work written by them and that they own all rights to it. Participants will indemnify and hold CBC/Radio-Canada\, Banff Centre and Canada Council for the Arts and their affiliates\, harmless from and against any and all loss\, damage\, costs and other expense arising out of claims\, whatever their nature\, resulting directly or indirectly from breach of this warranty. \nParticipants submitting to the prize \nIn submitting their work\, each participant grants CBC/Radio-Canada (both for French and English services) the following licenses free of charge and irrevocably: \n\nThe right to translate an excerpt from the work submitted (no more than 15% of its total length)\nThe non-exclusive right to reproduce and publish an excerpt from the work submitted (no more than 15% of its total length) on the websites and platforms controlled or authorized by CBC/Radio-Canada\, both in the original language and in translation\n\nFinalists and winners \nIn accepting a prize\, the winners and finalists grant to CBC/Radio-Canada\, for the entire term of all rights\, the following licenses: \n\nThe right to translate the work\nThe right to reproduce and publish the work in all formats\, including on the websites and platforms controlled or authorized by CBC/Radio-Canada and on any future merchandise\, both in the original language and in translation; net income from any sale or exploitation of merchandise shall be split 50/50 between CBC/Radio-Canada and the participant or participants\nThe right to make an audio/video recording by means of any existing or not-yet-invented technology\, to distribute and broadcast readings of works or excerpts therefrom in the original language or in translation\, on CBC/Radio-Canada networks and websites/platforms controlled or authorized by CBC/Radio-Canada\nThe right to edit\, abridge or excerpt the work for the purposes of publication or broadcast. (The participant will be consulted if significant edits are necessary.)\n\nFor a purpose of clarity\, the Licenses granted to CBC/Radio-Canada by the finalists and winners are for all territories throughout the world (unless another agreement is reached with CBC/Radio-Canada) and are exclusive for a year from the date of acceptance of the prize and non-exclusive thereafter. Moreover\, the finalist and winners\, as well as the people accompanying them\, or their parents or guardians if the winners are minors\, shall agree\, if necessary\, to have their name and/or picture\, including their photograph and/or their voice used for advertising purposes related to this competition\, free of charge. \nThese licenses include the rights for CBC/Radio-Canada to grant sub-licences to exercise the rights granted by this licence. \nRead full guidelines here. \nhttps://www.cbc.ca/books/literaryprizes/cbc-literary-prizes-rules-regulations-1.4090957

SUMMARY:Rolling Deadlines - Seeking Great Short Stories to be Read on Video
DESCRIPTION:Seeking Great Short Stories to be Read on Video\nDeadline: Rolling\n\n\n\n\nSomeShortStories.com is a new website featuring videos of our narrators reading short fiction aloud. We are seeking stories in the literary genre between 1\,500 – 8\,000 words.
