SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Cosmic Daffodil Journal. Theme: In the Company of Strangers
DESCRIPTION:Chance encounters\, brief interactions\, and how fleeting moments with strangers can shape our lives. \nGENERAL GUIDELINES \nWe are looking for: poetry\, flash fiction/non-fiction (600 words maximum)\, short story (1000 words maximum)\, photography\, and visual art. \nAll submissions MUST follow the theme. Pieces that do not adhere to the theme will automatically be rejected. \nPlease keep in mind the word counts for flash fiction/nonfiction and short stories. \nPlease include an artist’s statement (1-2 sentences) with photography or visual art pieces. This helps us during the reviewing process. \nBiographies must be 50 words or less. \nPrompt Ideas \n\n\nThe Stranger on the Train: Write a story about two strangers who briefly meet on a crowded train during their daily commute. Their conversation is short but leaves a lasting impact on both of them. How does this fleeting interaction change their perspective on life or influence the decisions they make afterward? \n\n\nA Note in the Library: While searching for a book in a library\, a person stumbles upon a note tucked between the pages. The note is addressed to someone else\, but it speaks directly to them in ways they can’t explain. Who wrote it\, and how does this unexpected discovery alter the course of their day or life? \n\n\nThe Unseen Connection: Two people have a brief\, seemingly insignificant interaction at a coffee shop—perhaps an accidental brush of hands or a shared moment of eye contact. Write about how this small encounter unravels in both of their minds afterward and the surprising ways it influences their thoughts\, choices\, or connections with others in the future. \n\n\nA Memory from the Street: One day\, you bump into a stranger while walking down the street. They offer a kind word or make a small gesture that lingers with you long after the encounter. Write about how this brief interaction begins to shape the way you see the world and yourself. \n\n\nThe Missing Letter: A person receives an old\, misaddressed letter from a stranger\, and although they’ve never met the sender\, the letter’s contents seem oddly personal. Write a story exploring the connection between the writer and the reader\, and how a short-lived moment of reading the letter changes both of their lives\, even if only for a moment. \n\n\nDive into “In the Company of Strangers” in your own way. Surprise us!

SUMMARY:P - Rattle Seeking Submissions for Their: Tribute to Late Bloomers
DESCRIPTION:Our Fall 2025 issue will be dedicated to poems written by “late bloomers”—those who only started publishing poetry regularly after the age of 50. Much ado is made in the literary world of younger poets making waves\, but it’s never too late to develop and share your voice\, and for many poets\, their best work comes at an older age. We hope this issue will be an inspiration to those just starting out\, and a counter to age-related biases. \nInclude a contributor’s note about when you starting publishing poetry significantly\, and how that prior life experience affects you as a poet. We don’t publish essays\, but always include a contributor notes section\, which functions as a series of micro-essays about the topic. \nYou may submit up to four previously uncurated poems (or pages of short poems) at the same time\, either in a single file or up to four files. Do not include your name or contact info within the file content. Do not submit more work in this category until we’ve replied. \nOverview:\n\nRattle does not accept work that has been previously curated\, in print or online—poems may be self-published on social media\, blogs\, or message boards\, but cannot have been published in books\, magazines\, or similar collections open to the public. We want to be the first publisher to highlight the poems\, but never want to discourage anyone from sharing their poems themselves. For more on this\, read “Uncurated: The Case for a New Term of Art.”\nRattle does not accept work that has been predominantly generated by artificial intelligence. Poetry is a tool for expanding the human spirit\, which means poems should be written by humans. It is possible to use A.I. toward that aim in some cases\, so if used A.I. to assist in the writing process\, please explain in the notes to your submission.\nSimultaneous submissions are encouraged.\nContributors to the print magazine receive $200 and a complimentary one-year subscription. Poems for “Online” categories receive $100.\nAll submissions are automatically considered for the annual Neil Postman Award for Metaphor\, a $2\,000 prize judged by the editors.\n\nVERY IMPORTANT:\n\nSubmissions cannot be revised after submission. Note that typos and minor changes never affect our decisions—proofreading is what editors are for. If you’ve made a significant mistake\, use the internal messaging system to send a new file as an attachment.\nTo withdraw a single poem from a submission of multiple poems\, just log in\, click on the submission\, and send a message to let us know which you’d like removed. Do not withdraw the entire submission—if you do\, the submission will no longer be active and we won’t see it.\nDon’t include any contact information in the file(s) that you submit. Your name and contact info will be included in the Submittable fields\, and this will make it easier for us to read fairly.\n\nFor more detailed information about rights\, rules\, privacy\, and payments for publication\, see our full guidelines. \nNOTE: Please don’t query to ask if we have a reply to your submission yet. If the status says “received” or “in-progress\,” then it’s received and in-progress. We always go as fast as we can\, but we’re only human and the submission flow waxes and wanes\, so response times vary considerably.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Stonecoast Review. Theme: Power
DESCRIPTION:What do you think of when you hear the word “power”? What does it mean to have power? What does it mean to use it? What does it mean to abuse it? How does it feel when it’s taken away? \n\nThe word connotes different definitions and bears different weights for each of us. It manifests itself in unexpected ways and settings\, and remains absent or suppressed in so many others. \n\nWe want to read literature and take in media that explore\, provoke\, challenge\, reconsider\, evoke\, or explode that concept for you. \n\nSubmission Guidelines \n\nSend submissions via Submittable only.\nPlease include a short cover letter and bio (50- and 100-word max.\, respectively).\nWe accept one prose submission\, one poetry submission (of up to three poems)\, or five pieces of visual art per author\, per submission cycle. Submissions that do not abide by these rules will not be considered for publication.\nYour work must be previously unpublished. (Stonecoast alumni may submit already published work for consideration as reprints.)\nWe encourage simultaneous submissions. However\, please withdraw your submission immediately if it’s accepted elsewhere. If you submit multiple poems and one is accepted at another publication\, please attach a note on Submittable identifying which poem is no longer available.\nPlease adhere to standard manuscript format: Double spaced\, 12 pt.\, Times New Roman font. Poetry may be single spaced. (If you tell us that diverging from these rules is integral to your piece\, we will consider it.)\nWhile we love to represent stories with raw\, emotional truth\, we ask that you refrain from submitting pieces featuring excessive sex\, violence\, assaults\, or suicide.\nWe will reject pieces determined to be written by the use of AI software.\n\n\nGenre Guidelines \nAs a reminder\, all pieces selected for publication will be featured online in June 2025. Due to page constraints\, only a few of these selected pieces will be featured in both the print and online Summer 2025 Issue. Please see below for word count limitations based on consideration for either Hybrid (Print + Online) or General (Online-only) publication formats. \n\nFiction. In accordance with the theme of power\, the fiction editors are looking for stories that invite the reader to think about what it means to have power\, how it feels when that power is taken from us\, and what it means to write from a place of power. We are looking for stories that push the boundaries of traditional fiction with regard to form and content. \n\nFiction. SUMMARY:PFN - Blogs subs are open for Fifth Wheel Press Blog. Theme: Tragic-Romantic
DESCRIPTION:Tragic-romantic is a dichotomy that often exists in baby queer relationships. I want to see people’s spin on tragedy or romance. For tragedy\, I want to see anything considered tragic: milk left on the counter\, elegies for people\, difficult breakups\, that one childhood best friend you don’t talk to anymore\, anger poems\, etc. For romance\, I want to see anything considered romantic: an ode to your favorite candy\, figuring out your gender\, rose tinted glasses\, ghazals to your partner\, anything at all that you love. Bonus points if it’s super queer! \nWe’ll be pairing submissions to publish one tragic piece and one romantic piece side by side. Regular fwp length guidelines apply (no more than 3 pages of poetry/2000 words of prose). \nfor all subs\nPlease submit via Duosuma; unless we have made prior arrangements with you\, email submissions will not be considered. Please allow 2-4 weeks for your submission to be processed. Submissions that are not formatted correctly or contain any racist\, homophobic\, transphobic\, ableist\, or otherwise intolerant content will not be considered. (Work that is based on lived experiences involving these topics is ok provided it does not glorify that kind of behavior.) \nContent warnings: We reserve the right to apply content warnings for sensitive topics to your work when published. Please also include them in your cover letter when submitting.

SUMMARY:N - Patina Magazine Seeking Submissions for Volume One on the Theme of: The Things We Carry
DESCRIPTION:Submissions are open for Patina’s inaugural volume\, themed ‘The Things We Carry”. \nSomething is only lost if it falls out of our collective memory. \nThis theme explores the tangible and intangible elements of culture that persist in our daily lives—from inherited objects and practices to knowledge systems and shared spaces. \nThere are stories in the spaces between memory and change. Stories of kitchens where ancestral recipes meet new ingredients. Of ancient crafts finding fresh hands. Of rituals reimagined\, but not forgotten. These stories exist in translation between what was and what becomes. \nWe invite narratives that illuminate what we choose (or are forced to) to carry forward\, from the weight of inherited kitchen tools to the muscle memory of craft\, from arrangements of space to patterns of gathering. We’re interested in stories that reveal how these carried things remain vital through our lives. \nThe things we carry are often simultaneously personal and collective\, and so we invite coverage of topics like: \n\nKitchen tools that have lived multiple lives\nAgricultural knowledge that guides present practice\nThe revival of historical third places and community gatherings\nThe materiality of what we take with us when we move: homes\, cities\, countries\nHow we take food through the seasons\, through preservation and transformation\nTraditional textiles making their mark on contemporary wardrobes\nHow objects of ritual and worship have changed (or remained the same)\n\nThis list of topics is just a starter; we are hungry for creative interpretations of this theme. The theme can be used as an entry point or the focus of your essay\, as long as all roads lead right back to the things we carry. \nThis is where we find them. This is where we tell them. \n  \nFormat and approach\nSend your pitches as an email to hello [@] readpatina.com with “PITCH: The Things We Carry” in the subject line. Patina publishes: \n\nLong-form narrative non-fiction features (2\,000–2\,500 words)\nPersonal essays (1\,500–2\,000 words)\n\nYour piece should consider the broader context of cultural practices\, include rich and careful documentation\, and should engage thoughtfully with the community being documented. Please include in your pitch: \n\nYour elevator pitch that makes clear what you’re writing about\, why it matters and how it connects to larger patterns of cultural continuity\nEstimated length\nA brief bio with relevant experience\n\nPlease submit your work as a Google Doc using a legible font\, size 12 with 1.5 spacing. List the word count and title at the top of the first page. Please provide only one submission per genre.https://readpatina.com/submit/

SUMMARY:PFN - Half Mystic Journal Seeking Submissions on the Theme of: Sevdah
DESCRIPTION:Submissions are open for Opus II\, Issue II of Half Mystic Journal until April 28\, 2025. \nOur twelfth issue celebrates the theme of sevdah. We’re looking for violin solos\, velvet on bare skin\, half lights\, broken odes\, empty airport terminals\, redamancy\, zinnias at the edge of wilting\, damask curtains\, clipped swans’ wings\, inosculation\, heroic crowns\, the memory of a late-night lake with a long-gone lover\, when the sky and water turned the same colour and met at the edge of the world. \nSevdah is a genre of Turkish and Bosnian folk music evoking sorrowful love and ecstatic\, amorous yearning—from the Arabic “sawda\,” meaning “black bile\,” or a melancholy state of longing. In Issue II of our second opus\, desire is holy and heavy as the still before the train comes. Moor us in the unquenchable. We want a begging to believe in. \nHalf Mystic Journal publishes poetry\, fiction\, creative nonfiction\, translations\, and hybrid work. We ask that each piece pertains to music and the sevdah theme. \nSubmit up to five pieces of up to 3000 words each. We don’t accept previously-published writing\, but we do accept and encourage simultaneous submissions. \nIn your cover letter\, include a brief biographical note and the genre(s) of your submission. For translations\, enclose the full text of the original piece and a statement declaring that you have the author’s permission to publish the translation\, or that the original text is in the public domain. Translations must be to or from English. \nWe recommend that you read Half Mystic Journal’s past issues to familiarise yourself with our goals\, aesthetics\, and style. Thank you for honouring us with your work. We don’t take that privilege for granted. \nYou can expect to hear from us within four weeks. If it’s been five weeks and you haven’t received a response\, please send us a note to enquire!

SUMMARY:P - Harbor Review Seeking Poems for their Summer Issue #15. Theme : (Sub)liminal
DESCRIPTION:This issue will explore the hidden layers of thought and emotion that shape our perceptions and experiences. Subliminal messaging\, often unnoticed and unacknowledged\, influences our beliefs\, desires\, and interactions in profound ways. Poets are invited to uncover the nuances of what lies beneath the surface of consciousness\, examining how unspoken truths and subconscious impulses can manifest in our lives.  \nThe liminal can represent those fleeting moments of change\, such as the twilight between day and night\, or the emotional space between joy and sorrow. These transitional phases often evoke feelings of uncertainty and possibility\, mirroring the subtle nudges of subliminal messaging that guide us without our full awareness. \nSend 1-3 poems in one document as a pdf or word document during our submission window. Include a short bio in your cover letter. The theme for issue #15 is “(Sub)liminal.” \n\nAll honorarium payments to contributors and prize winners will be paid through PayPal. Sorry\, no exceptions.

SUMMARY:PFN - NonBinary Review Seeking Submissions on the Theme of : Epiphany
DESCRIPTION:NonBinary Review is currently open for submissions on the theme of EPIPHANY. \nIt’s a flash of inspiration. It’s a slow realization of something that was in front of you the whole time. It’s seeing something familiar from an entirely unexpected angle. We have these sudden flashes of inspiration all the time – some as subtle as discovering you like tea with honey\, others as momentous as realizing that your idea for a new invention could change the world. \nWe’re looking for speculative takes on epiphany\, from the realization that television is all real and true\, to the discovery that the life you live in your dreams is your real life\, and this one is the dream. We want to be just as surprised as your narrators by the things they discover and where those discoveries lead them. \nWe’re NOT looking for “I realized I hated my spouse so I left and my life got better” stories\, sexual coming of age stories\, or anything else that doesn’t fit the speculative genre. \nIMPORTANT NOTICE\nZoetic Press does not accept AI generated content. If our editors judge that your content is AI-generated\, it will be declined. \nAll submissions must have a clear relationship to our theme and be submitted in 12pt Times New Roman\, or they will be rejected. SUMMARY:FN - Special Call for descant 2025. Theme: Memory Mining
DESCRIPTION:Memory is a fickle beast—comforting one moment\, deceiving the next. It allows us to relive shared experiences\, yet it can also blur the lines between what is real and what is fabricated. In our post-truth era\, where narratives are shaped by perception and social media algorithms\, memory takes on a life of its own. \nHave you and someone else experienced the same event but recalled it in completely different ways? Do you find yourself second-guessing what is a fact and what is fiction within the stories you consume? If you could rewrite the past\, how would truth transform into fiction? Give us your wildly true tales of memory or distorted tales of fiction that leave us questioning what is real and what is imagined. \nWe invite you to share your truth\, whatever that may be\, however memory has shaped it. \nSubmissions are open for Memory Mining. Please indicate whether your work is Fiction or Creative Nonfiction when submitting. \nWriters must confirm that work accepted by descant has not been previously published and that they will credit descant as the original publisher whenever and wherever else the work may be placed. \ndescant seeks high-quality work in either innovative or traditional forms. We usually prefer fiction to be 5000 words or fewer\, but we do\, however\, occasionally accept submissions exceeding this length. descant specifies no particular subject matter or style. Please submit only one story.

SUMMARY:PFN - Men Matters Online Journal (MMOJ) Seeking Submissions on The Bachelor Spectrum: Explorations of Masculinity Outside Marriage
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean for a man to navigate the world as a bachelor? In the 21st century\, marriage rates have fallen dramatically across many countries. While the proportion of men (and women) who will never marry increases\, their counterparts who do eventually tie the knot are doing so later in life – and thus experiencing a prolonged period of bachelorhood. \nIt is worth noting\, of course\, that this is not an entirely modern phenomenon. There have always been men who remained lifelong bachelors\, whether due to choice\, circumstance\, or a combination of factors. Poverty\, economic uncertainty\, and long-term incarceration are perennial obstacles to marriage and fatherhood\, for example. On the other hand\, men of the past have also forsaken or postponed marriage via initiation into particular religious orders and military regiments. \nFrom the Knights Templar to Japan’s “herbivore men”\, the bachelor is often a complex figure caught in the shifting tides of gender norms\, cultural flux\, and sociohistorical change. We invite poets\, fiction writers\, and creative-non-fiction writers to explore the multifaceted lives of unmarried men across the spectrum of identity—straight\, queer\, cis\, trans\, and beyond. \n  \nWe are seeking works that delve into: \n\nThe historical and cultural evolution of bachelorhood.\nThe joys and struggles of single life in contemporary society.\nThe intersections of masculinity\, queerness\, and bachelorhood.\nForms of attachment and fatherhood outside of marriage (e.g. cohabitation\, single fathers\, baby daddies)\nGlobal and cultural variations in the perception of unmarried men\, including the unique roles of Hindu sannyasis and yogis\, as well as Christian clergy\, Buddhist monks\, and other religious ascetics who remain single and celibate as part of their spiritual vocations. These men embody bachelorhood not as a state of independence\, but as a devotion to faith\, meditation\, and service\, challenging societal norms surrounding partnership and masculinity.\nMedia portrayals and personal experiences that challenge or embrace traditional tropes.\nLoneliness\, freedom\, intimacy\, and the search for self in the absence of partnership.\n\n  \nWe welcome works that engage with these themes in fresh\, thought-provoking ways. Whether you offer a lyrical ode to solitude\, a sharp critique of societal norms\, or a story that redefines what it means to be a bachelor\, we want to hear from you. \nPublication date: Last week of June 2025 \nSUBMISSION GUIDELINES \nPlease submit your manuscript as a Word Document. The text of your work should be in Garamond\, 12-point size. Manuscripts should have 1.5 spacing on A4-sized paper with margins of 1.25” (right and left) and 1” (top and bottom). \nPoetry: \nUp to 5 poems. There is no minimum or maximum word limit but poems that run up to a maximum of 40 lines are preferred. \nFiction and Creative Non-Fiction: \nA single work\, maximum of 5\,000 words. \n  \nHow to submit your work: \nSubmit your work through email: menmattersonlinejournal@gmail.com In the email cover letter please indicate that this is an original and unpublished work that is being submitted. \nAttach your individual submissions in separate attachments. Make sure there are no personal details in the files containing the submissions. \nIn a separate file provide a brief biography in third person (maximum 100 words) \nFile format: Word Document. The text of your work should be in Garamond (12 point size)\, with 1.5 spacing. \nSimultaneous submissions are welcome. It is your responsibility to inform us in time when the work submitted here is accepted somewhere else.

SUMMARY:PFN - Call for Submissions to Icebreakers Lit. Theme: Close Encounters
DESCRIPTION:Theme (Close Encounters) \nIcebreakers wants your almost\, maybes. Your brushes with the other worldly. Your longings. Send us your work that explores your interpretation of “close encounters” (Aliens in no way required. Though of course we still love them <3 ). \nCollaboration \nAt our minty liquid core\, Icebreakers is about fostering connection within the lit community. As such\, general and themed submissions should  be the work of two or more authors / artists (no max). If you’re coming to the party with collaborators already in mind\, great! If not\, please  see our “spin the bottle” opportunity here. \nWhat we accept \nIcebreakers is interested in poetry\, flash\, fiction\, essays\, creative nonfiction (CNF)\, that weird little thing you wrote in your notes app but don’t know what to call\, etc. We want your art\, and we know that art comes in many glorious forms. We aren’t too picky about rules\, but to keep this reasonable\, here are a few requests: \n\nPoetry: up to 3 pieces in any form\, any length\nMicro Fiction & CNF: 1 piece\, 300 words or less\nFlash Fiction & CNF: 1 piece\, 1000 words or less\nFiction\, CNF\, & Hybrids: 1 piece\, 2500 words or less\n\nWe also accept simultaneous submissions and previously published work. Just let us know if you’re published elsewhere so we can do a little celebratory dance with you.\nCover letter and bios \nWe love getting to know you\, but no need to be super formal. Most importantly\, please include the names of all collaborators. Also include a publication-ready bio for each contributor with your social media handles. One to three sentences should do the trick. If you would rather collaborate on a single amalgamated bio\, that’s cool\, too!\nOther stuff \nYou may find yourself on the submissions portal of a strange literary magazine\, with a beautiful poem or story\, and you may ask yourself\, “Well\, how did I get here?” And you may ask yourself\, “Who the hell are these Icebreakers people?” And you may ask yourself\, “What do they want from me??!” If that’s the case\, hop on over to our website for more info.

SUMMARY:N - Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society Seeking Submissions on: Feminism\, Antifeminism\, and the Mobilization of Regret
DESCRIPTION:Feminism\, Antifeminism\, and the Mobilization of Regret\nFeminism is forward-looking and world-building. Feminists everywhere can call to mind the manifestos\, mobilizations\, solidarities\, creative inspirations\, legal propositions\, and revolutionary paradigms that inspire us to action and move us toward more just futures. At the same time\, we may also be haunted by obstacles encountered\, losses experienced\, and regrets felt along the way. With over fifty years of feminist history behind the journal—and\, we hope\, another fifty years of feminist troublemaking ahead—Signs seeks essays that delineate both how feminists may experience\, theorize\, and productively apply the concept of regret and how it may\, alternatively\,  thwart the development of feminist futures. \nAs Andrea Long Chu asserts\, “Where there is freedom\, there will always be regret. . . . Regret is freedom projected into the past.” Janet Landman\, similarly\, has conceptualized regret as signifying the “persistence of the possible.” On the one hand\, how can feminists engage these generative qualities of regret—freedom and possibility—in our thinking and action? If there are choices that we\, individually or collectively\, regret\, how might our regrets motivate political or personal choices? On the other\, how do false narratives deployed by the Right\, such as threats of regret over abortion or gender transition\, act to undermine individual transformation and broader social change? \nWe seek essays that make theoretical\, analytical\, and/or activist interventions. We welcome papers that engage the complex dynamics and larger contexts of regret\, from the personal\, emotional\, and creative realms to the social\, political\, and empirical; or that consider how regret converges with or departs from related affective terrains of shame\, guilt\, grief\, or nostalgia. As always\, Signs encourages transdisciplinary and transnational essays that address substantive feminist questions\, debates\, and forms of literary\, artistic\, and cultural representation and that minimize disciplinary or academic jargon. \nPossible areas of focus might include: \n\nHow is regret\, as affect and as political discourse\, constructed in relation to gender\, race\, class\, sexuality\, nationality\, and history? Whose harms are considered regrettable\, and whose are merely collateral damage?\nHow do regressive cultural phenomena such as “gender-critical” discourse; crusades against diversity\, equity\, and belonging initiatives; book banning; or “incel” culture position the loss of white\, heterosexual\, cisgender hegemony as regrettable? How can feminist action and discourse counter such framings?\nSome feminist and antiracist social media movements\, such as #MeToo/#BalanceTonPorc/#YoTambien\, #ShoutYourAbortion\, or #BlackLivesMatter\, resist social discourses that cast violent harm as a result of regrettable individual actions (such as what someone was wearing or where they were walking). Such movements resist regret and transform silence into speech; are they successful in dismantling power structures?\nRegret may stem from conflict within feminist movements. For example\, regret may result in or from efforts to “call in” or “call out” negative behavior in our classrooms\, communities\, and online spaces. Must such regret end in irresolvable conflict\, or can it produce new coalitions?\nSetbacks in progress toward political goals—for example\, the overturning of Roe v. Wade—may lead to regret for past strategic choices. Such regret has the potential to cause paralysis or apathy; can it instead embolden us to develop new and more effective strategies?\nThe social\, political\, and economic conditions of late capitalism around the world—such as lack of childcare\, eldercare\, healthcare\, and housing—force impossible “choices” in relation to parenting\, intimate relations\, and work and create the conditions for regret. Nationalist ideologies of gender and family recast such constraints as “natural” and necessary. How can feminists counter such constraints and distortions?\nIn “From a Survivor\,” Adrienne Rich writes regretfully of her marriage and her husband’s suicide\, “I don’t know who we thought we were / that our personalities/ could resist the failures of the race. . . . / Like everybody else\, we thought of ourselves as special.” Where and how do regret and its related affects (shame\, grief\, loss\, nostalgia) appear in or structure feminist art and literature?\n\nThe deadline for submissions is May 1\, 2025. Laura Green (Northeastern University) and Chris Bobel (University of Massachusetts Boston) will serve as guest editors. Manuscripts should be submitted electronically through Signs’ Editorial Manager system at https://www.editorialmanager.com/signs/default.aspx and must conform to the guidelines for submission available at http://signsjournal.org/for-authors/author-guidelines/.

SUMMARY:F - Liars' League Looking for Stories about being: Down & Out
DESCRIPTION:Submit your work to be read LIVE at our next event\, DOWN & OUT on Tuesday 10th June at The Phoenix \n\n\nFallen from grace\, or falling on your face\, out for the count or out-out on the town\, down in the dumps or deep below the earth (or the waves)\, on the road with no fixed abode … be creative and show us what you can do with this theme! As ever\, we’re looking for unpublished short fiction of 800-2000 words\, & will consider flash fiction\, short stories & even novel extracts (so long as they can stand alone). Please see full guidelines here\, then email to liars@liarsleague.com by 11.59pm UK time on Sunday 4th May.\n\nWHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR\, IN SHORT:\n– New fiction\, i.e. unpublished (print/web/audio)\n– Stories which are on-theme\n– Anonymised (no name on the document)\n– Word count: STRICTLY 800-2000\n– Send to: liars@liarsleague.com \n\nStories must be \n1. Unpublished (in print or online)\, unbroadcast\, and not a prizewinner in any previous competition. \n2. Between 800-2000 words long. \n3. Submitted to liars@liarsleague.com by 11.59pm (UK time) of the deadline day for the theme in question. Deadlines and monthly themes can be found here. \n4. Submitted as an MS Word (.doc\, .docx) or .rtf document\, ideally with 1.5 or double spacing. NO PDFs PLEASE. \n5. Attached to an email which has the story title\, the month of the event and the theme in the subject header: e.g. Love Story\, February\, He & She. Please put your name at the bottom of your email but NOT on your story\, as we prefer to judge anonymously. \n6. A prose short story. This means no poetry\, no scripts\, no non-fiction. We’ll look at novel extracts\, but only if they work as stand-alone pieces. \n7. ON-THEME. This means that there should be a traceable link to the theme\, or that the theme should be invoked or interpreted as a central part of the story. Simply featuring a bar called “Duck & Dive” if that’s the theme is not enough; but make your main character a dodgy dealer in stolen goods\, and we’ll be interested. \nWriters must be \n1. Willing to have their name and the text of their story up on this site if they win. \n2. Willing to be paid for their work in kind. Unfortunately\, Liars’ League does not currently pay contributors in $ or £. However\, if your story is chosen\, you will benefit from the following: \n– Publication of your story on this site: it will also be considered for future print anthologies published by our partners Arachne Press \n– Free drinks all night (if you are able to attend the event). Teetotallers will be fed. \n– A reading of your work by a professional actor (CLICK HERE to see a blog post on what that’s like\, written by five-time winning author Mike Clarke) \n– An MP3 and a link to a YouTube video recording of the reading \n– SUBMITTING FROM ABROAD? If you *cannot* attend the event\, due to living abroad or some other obstacle\, we will send you a free book to thank you for your contribution\, as drinks are rather messy to post. You can choose your favourite title from our selection of four anthologies (one award-winning!)\, or any book by any of our authors. \nIMPORTANT: By submitting your work to Liars’ League you are giving us permission to add your email address to our mailing list – this means we can inform you of the winning stories and send updates\, links to our latest stories\, and competition and submission opportunities approximately monthly. If you want to be removed from our mailing list you can email us at any time with Unsubscribe in the subject line. We’ll never share your data with anyone else – promise. \nSubmission of your work also gives us permission to upload the text and an audio and video recording of your story (if successful) onto our website\, YouTube channel and podcast so that everyone can enjoy it. If this is an issue just email and we’re happy to discuss. \nAnd finally … \n1. Please submit no more than ONE story per theme. This is for reading-time reasons. \n2. Please don’t resubmit any story we have previously rejected unless we ask you to\, however much it has changed. \n3. Please don’t be discouraged. We really want to see your work – so send it in!
