DESCRIPTION:OutWrite is pleased to announce its fifth Chapbook Competition\, running from June 1st to June 30th. The winning chapbooks will be celebrated at the 2023 OutWrite LGBTQ literary festival. Each winner will receive 25 copies of their winning chapbook\, an offer of print publication from Neon Hemlock Press\, and an opportunity to read from their work at OutWrite 2024. \nThere is no fee to enter this contest. \nPlease follow these guidelines in preparing your submission: \n\nChapbooks may be submitted in three categories: poetry\, nonfiction and fiction\nWe will accept submissions in all three categories in English.\nOutWrite is a celebration of LGBTQ literature; entries that explore aspects of LGBTQ culture or identity are encouraged.\nThematically-linked works are encouraged\, but not required. There are no limitations regarding genre.\nManuscripts should be no shorter than 20 pages and no longer than 40 pages. This does not include the table of contents or title page.\nSubmissions are open from June 1 to June 30th\, 2023.\nEach writer may only submit one entry per category.\nYour manuscript should be in a standard size 12 font. DESCRIPTION:The BLR Prizes award outstanding writing related to themes of health\, healing\, illness\, the mind\, and the body. Winners are published in the spring issue of BLR. For each genre\, first prize is $1000 and honorable mention is $300. \nFiction: We seek character-driven fiction with original voices and strong settings. We do not publish genre fiction (romance\, sci-fi\, horror). We have only occasionally published flash fiction. While we are always interested in creative explorations in style\, we do lean toward classic short stories.\nNonfiction: We are looking for essays that reach beyond the standard ‘illness narrative’ to develop a topic in an engaging and original manner. Incorporate engaging and creative analysis that allows anecdotes to serve a larger purpose. (Please\, no academic discourses or works with footnotes. )\nPoetry: We encourage poems that are accessible to a wide audience. Characteristics we look for are vivid writing\, strong narrative\, and rendering the familiar new. DESCRIPTION:All My Relations Volume 5 is an art and lit\, online and printed magazine\, exploring the theme of overcoming. This volume is open to BIPOC\, gender variant\, and disabled creatives only\, in consideration of the theme. Own voices only\, please.\nWe are looking for honest pieces reflecting on times you overcame an obstacle either internal or external\, how your ancestors may have overcome obstacles\, or musings on alternate universes where people are given the space and abundance to come as they are without having to overcome. We are looking for pieces that honor your experience\, honor your journey\, imagine the absence of otherization\, and/or aid in communal healing. \nRequirements for Submissions\nWe require written submissions to be under 5\,000 words for fiction and nonfiction and under 5 pages for poetry\, submitted in a Word Document or text file. PDFs will not be considered and will be rejected outright. Submissions must be in English as\, unfortunately\, that is the only language we can read. Send us your unconventional ghost stories\, the ones that make us rethink what a ghost story can be. They may not be the translated work of another poet. \n\n\nPoems must not have been published or accepted for publication elsewhere (including online). \n\n\nPoems must not have been submitted for or won any other poetry competition at the time of submission. Poems may be submitted for other competitions after the closing date\, but entrants must withdraw their poems from the Winchester Poetry Festival in the event of being shortlisted for any other prize.  \n\n\nEntry fee: £6 for first poem\, £5 for subsequent poems in a single submission. \n\n\nA number of free entries are available for poets to whom an entry fee would be a barrier. DESCRIPTION:Current Contest\n\n\nJuly 2023 Fox Tales Contest: Music \nBlack Fox is now accepting contest submissions for a new series called Fox Tales. The theme for July 2023 is “Music.” We are open to loose interpretations of the theme in any genre\, as always. \nWe’ve been looking for ways to have more fun with our contests\, and we’re excited to share a new series of month-long contests that will run in between our two main contests. This will allow us to publish more writers and creative work outside of our usual biannual issues! \nFox Tales will be published as “mini books” on our Instagram account and website starting Fall 2023! Instagram carousels remind us of turning book pages\, and we thought: Wouldn’t it be fun to transform carousels into mini books? We will design carousel pages for the winning stories and poetry. Writers should keep in mind word counts. We suggest keeping submissions to 500 words. Poets may submit 3-5 poems but should keep in mind that they must fit on 8 Instagram squares. \nIf you make playlists for your characters or works in progress\, this contest is for you! We’re looking for work inspired by your favorite songs or work that has music represented in some way. What mood\, feeling\, or characters can your favorite songs inspire in a story or poem? DESCRIPTION:Submission Guidelines\nUpdated November 2\, 2022 \n\n\nWe love that writers around the world are inspired by our first lines\, and we know that not every story will be sent to us. However\, we ask that you do not submit stories starting with our first lines to other journals (or post them online on public sites) until we’ve notified you as to our decision (usually four weeks after the deadline). When the entire premise of the publication revolves around one sentence\, we don’t want it to look as if we stole that sentence from another writer. If you have questions\, feel free to drop us a line. \nAlso\, we understand that writers may add our first line to a story they are currently working on or have already completed\, and that’s cool. But please do not add our first line to a previously published story and submit it to us. We do not accept previously published stories\, even if they have been repurposed for our first lines. And\, just to be clear\, we do not accept simultaneous submissions. \nOne more thing while I’ve got you here: Writers compete against one another for magazine space\, so\, technically\, every literary magazine is running a contest. There are\, however\, literary magazines that run traditional contests\, where they charge entry fees and rank the winners. We do not – nor will we ever – charge a submission fee\, nor do we rank our stories in order of importance. Occasionally\, we run contests to help come up with new first lines\, or we run fun\, gimmicky competitions for free stuff\, but the actual journal is not a contest in the traditional sense. \nFiction: All stories must be written with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way\, unless otherwise noted by the editors. The story should be between 300 and 5\,000 words (this is more like a guideline and not a hard-and-fast rule; going over or under the word count won’t get your story tossed from the slush pile). The sentences can be found on the home page of The First Line’s website\, as well as in the prior issue. Note: We are open to all genres. We try to make TFL as eclectic as possible. \nPoetry: We do accept poetry\, though rarely. We have no restrictions on form or line count\, but all poems must begin with the first line provided. The line cannot be altered in any way. \nAll Submissions: Writers should include a two- to three-sentence biography of themselves that we can use in the journal should your story or poem be accepted. \nMultiple Submissions: We don’t mind if you want to submit multiple submissions for the same issue. However\, it is unlikely we will use more than one of your stories or poems in the same issue. \n\n\n\n\nNotification: We don’t make decisions about submissions until after each issue closes. We typically send notices four to five weeks after the issue’s deadline to everyone who submitted. You can also check the website’s home page for each issue’s production status. \n\n\n\n\nPayment: We pay on publication: $25.00 – $50.00 for fiction\, $10.00 for poetry\, and $25.00 for nonfiction (all U.S. dollars). We also send you a copy of the issue in which your piece appears. Short stories about alternative routes\, roads less travelled\, unexpected journeys\, that examine lessoned learned\, cautionary tales\, surprising endings\, friends made along the way. Play with unconventional storytelling\, or tell a story that plays with ‘epic journey’ tropes. What obstacles can keep your characters from reaching their goals? Have they reached their ending yet? Has something lead to a possibility they would have never otherwise imagined? \nSometimes the way forward isn’t simple\, and often it’s these detours through life that make for compelling\, hopeful\, significant\, surprising\, or comical stories – stories that linger on characterisation\, resilience\, unorthodox experiences\, and new ways of looking at the world.
