DESCRIPTION:Submissions are open for Opus II\, Issue II of Half Mystic Journal until April 28\, 2025. \nOur twelfth issue celebrates the theme of sevdah. We’re looking for violin solos\, velvet on bare skin\, half lights\, broken odes\, empty airport terminals\, redamancy\, zinnias at the edge of wilting\, damask curtains\, clipped swans’ wings\, inosculation\, heroic crowns\, the memory of a late-night lake with a long-gone lover\, when the sky and water turned the same colour and met at the edge of the world. \nSevdah is a genre of Turkish and Bosnian folk music evoking sorrowful love and ecstatic\, amorous yearning—from the Arabic “sawda\,” meaning “black bile\,” or a melancholy state of longing. In Issue II of our second opus\, desire is holy and heavy as the still before the train comes. Moor us in the unquenchable. We want a begging to believe in. \nHalf Mystic Journal publishes poetry\, fiction\, creative nonfiction\, translations\, and hybrid work. We ask that each piece pertains to music and the sevdah theme. \nSubmit up to five pieces of up to 3000 words each. We don’t accept previously-published writing\, but we do accept and encourage simultaneous submissions. \nIn your cover letter\, include a brief biographical note and the genre(s) of your submission. For translations\, enclose the full text of the original piece and a statement declaring that you have the author’s permission to publish the translation\, or that the original text is in the public domain. DESCRIPTION:What does it mean for a man to navigate the world as a bachelor? In the 21st century\, marriage rates have fallen dramatically across many countries. While the proportion of men (and women) who will never marry increases\, their counterparts who do eventually tie the knot are doing so later in life – and thus experiencing a prolonged period of bachelorhood. \nIt is worth noting\, of course\, that this is not an entirely modern phenomenon. There have always been men who remained lifelong bachelors\, whether due to choice\, circumstance\, or a combination of factors. Poverty\, economic uncertainty\, and long-term incarceration are perennial obstacles to marriage and fatherhood\, for example. On the other hand\, men of the past have also forsaken or postponed marriage via initiation into particular religious orders and military regiments. \nFrom the Knights Templar to Japan’s “herbivore men”\, the bachelor is often a complex figure caught in the shifting tides of gender norms\, cultural flux\, and sociohistorical change. We invite poets\, fiction writers\, and creative-non-fiction writers to explore the multifaceted lives of unmarried men across the spectrum of identity—straight\, queer\, cis\, trans\, and beyond. \n  \nWe are seeking works that delve into: \n\nThe historical and cultural evolution of bachelorhood.\nThe joys and struggles of single life in contemporary society.\nThe intersections of masculinity\, queerness\, and bachelorhood.\nForms of attachment and fatherhood outside of marriage (e.g. cohabitation\, single fathers\, baby daddies)\nGlobal and cultural variations in the perception of unmarried men\, including the unique roles of Hindu sannyasis and yogis\, as well as Christian clergy\, Buddhist monks\, and other religious ascetics who remain single and celibate as part of their spiritual vocations. DESCRIPTION:Feminism\, Antifeminism\, and the Mobilization of Regret\nFeminism is forward-looking and world-building. Feminists everywhere can call to mind the manifestos\, mobilizations\, solidarities\, creative inspirations\, legal propositions\, and revolutionary paradigms that inspire us to action and move us toward more just futures. At the same time\, we may also be haunted by obstacles encountered\, losses experienced\, and regrets felt along the way. With over fifty years of feminist history behind the journal—and\, we hope\, another fifty years of feminist troublemaking ahead—Signs seeks essays that delineate both how feminists may experience\, theorize\, and productively apply the concept of regret and how it may\, alternatively\,  thwart the development of feminist futures. \nAs Andrea Long Chu asserts\, “Where there is freedom\, there will always be regret. . . . Regret is freedom projected into the past.” Janet Landman\, similarly\, has conceptualized regret as signifying the “persistence of the possible.” On the one hand\, how can feminists engage these generative qualities of regret—freedom and possibility—in our thinking and action? If there are choices that we\, individually or collectively\, regret\, how might our regrets motivate political or personal choices? On the other\, how do false narratives deployed by the Right\, such as threats of regret over abortion or gender transition\, act to undermine individual transformation and broader social change? \nWe seek essays that make theoretical\, analytical\, and/or activist interventions. We welcome papers that engage the complex dynamics and larger contexts of regret\, from the personal\, emotional\, and creative realms to the social\, political\, and empirical; or that consider how regret converges with or departs from related affective terrains of shame\, guilt\, grief\, or nostalgia. As always\, Signs encourages transdisciplinary and transnational essays that address substantive feminist questions\, debates\, and forms of literary\, artistic\, and cultural representation and that minimize disciplinary or academic jargon. \nPossible areas of focus might include: \n\nHow is regret\, as affect and as political discourse\, constructed in relation to gender\, race\, class\, sexuality\, nationality\, and history? Whose harms are considered regrettable\, and whose are merely collateral damage?\nHow do regressive cultural phenomena such as “gender-critical” discourse; crusades against diversity\, equity\, and belonging initiatives; book banning; or “incel” culture position the loss of white\, heterosexual\, cisgender hegemony as regrettable? How can feminist action and discourse counter such framings?\nSome feminist and antiracist social media movements\, such as #MeToo/#BalanceTonPorc/#YoTambien\, #ShoutYourAbortion\, or #BlackLivesMatter\, resist social discourses that cast violent harm as a result of regrettable individual actions (such as what someone was wearing or where they were walking). Such movements resist regret and transform silence into speech; are they successful in dismantling power structures?\nRegret may stem from conflict within feminist movements. For example\, regret may result in or from efforts to “call in” or “call out” negative behavior in our classrooms\, communities\, and online spaces. Must such regret end in irresolvable conflict\, or can it produce new coalitions?\nSetbacks in progress toward political goals—for example\, the overturning of Roe v. Wade—may lead to regret for past strategic choices. Such regret has the potential to cause paralysis or apathy; can it instead embolden us to develop new and more effective strategies?\nThe social\, political\, and economic conditions of late capitalism around the world—such as lack of childcare\, eldercare\, healthcare\, and housing—force impossible “choices” in relation to parenting\, intimate relations\, and work and create the conditions for regret. Nationalist ideologies of gender and family recast such constraints as “natural” and necessary. How can feminists counter such constraints and distortions?\nIn “From a Survivor\,” Adrienne Rich writes regretfully of her marriage and her husband’s suicide\, “I don’t know who we thought we were / that our personalities/ could resist the failures of the race. . . . / Like everybody else\, we thought of ourselves as special.” Where and how do regret and its related affects (shame\, grief\, loss\, nostalgia) appear in or structure feminist art and literature?\n\nThe deadline for submissions is May 1\, 2025. DESCRIPTION:Happy Pride Month! Rock and a Hard Place Press is a proud ally of the LGBTQ+ community\, and this month\, we want stories where the pride rainbow isn’t quite as bright. Queer characters (and queer people\, for that matter) put up with enough bullshit from homophobes and transphobes\, and this month we want noir tales where they turn the tables on the haters in fabulous and brutal ways. \nInterested in Submitting?\nStone’s Throw will open for submissions the first three days of every month\, from 12AM on the first through 12AM on the fourth (with some wiggle room here and there to account for the editors being human). We’re looking for all the same dark fiction\, crime\, and noir as our usual submissions\, but with a target length between 1\,000 and 2\,000 words\, and aligned with the monthly submissions prompt (see below). DESCRIPTION:Adi is thinking about alternative political visions for a world in desperate need of them. We want examples from outside of the mainstream\, stories about practices\, ideas\, and movements that were/are suppressed by economic\, socio-cultural\, religious\, or imperial (colonial) powers. We privilege perspectives from the Global South\, always interested in how we might reorient our political universe towards those organic alliances\, intertwined liberation theologies\, grassroots movements\, and revolutionary philosophers. But we are also interested in the experiences of all marginalized peoples everywhere as they have explored alternative economies\, subversive strategies\, and surprising solidarities. Pieces could be based on historical events\, or could focus on imagined futures that subvert current empires. \nIn the words of James Baldwin\, “Try to imagine how you would feel if you woke up one morning to find the sun shining and all the stars aflame. You would be frightened because it is out of the order of nature. Any upheaval in the universe is terrifying because it so profoundly attacks one’s sense of one’s own reality. Well\, the black man has functioned in the white man’s world as a fixed star\, as an immovable pillar: and as he moves out of his place\, heaven and earth are shaken to their foundation.” \nWhat realignments\, restorations\, revisions and resurrections might we uncover and foster with the stars aflame? \nPlease interpret this call expansively and imaginatively. Familiarize yourself with the range and spirit of our archives; Adi tends toward creative\, experimental approaches to political writing\, measuring the effects of policy through the intimate lives and experiences of people with a particular focus on those on the margins and in the Global South. We’ve previously published fiction on ghosts in a post-fossil fuel world; intervention through the eyes of a fugitive lion;  healthcare bureaucracy and restrictions on reproductive rights; the reimagination of the myth of the faceless woman; and a family’s decision on citizenship while facing an American apocalypse.  \nWe do not want dreary political agitprop. We love work that bends genres\, that embraces the absurd\, that excavates interior lives alongside external conflicts. The current presidential administration has removed LGBTQ+ and HIV resources from government websites. Google has removed Pride month and several other diversity holidays from their calendar. The National Park Service has removed “transgender” and “queer” from the Stonewall Monument website. All of these attacks are meant to do one thing: erase queer people. \nBoudin is currently looking for creative work that speaks to queer existence and experience. We are looking for fiction\, creative nonfiction\, and poetry that speaks on the beautiful moments of queer life\, the not so beautiful moments\, and even the everyday uneventful moments. The goal of this issue if to remind everyone that queer people have always been here and will always be here. We cannot be erased. \nNo fee! Aim to keep the fiction/CNF/hybrids under 5\,000 or so words. DESCRIPTION:Heron Tree volume 12 will be dedicated to found poems composed from sources published in or before 1929. \nWe will be accepting submissions in the following categories: \n\nFound poems created from any source material(s) published in or before 1929.\nIn honor of our 12th regular volume\, we’re inviting found poems (still created from sources published in or before 1929) that incorporate 12 in some way. For instance\, a poem could have 12 syllables\, 12 words\, or 12 lines; it could use the word “twelve” or “dozen;” it could be an erasure of page 12 or Chapter 12 of a particular book; it could be created from a word-pool you generated by gathering every twelfth word of a source; it could be a cento combining 12 different sources. These are just suggestions!\n\nWe encourage you to download and read some collections of found poetry that we have published in the past: Found in the Public Domain\, Songs\, From the Blue Fairy\, Of Climates & Continents\, and all the poems in volume 8\, volume 9\, volume 10\, and volume 11. \nMore information: \n– We are interested in all approaches to found poetry construction and erased or remixed texts. \n– Poems that are not in one of the categories listed above will not be considered. \n– If you are working with a text that was translated into English\, the English translation must also be published in or before 1929. \n– Send up to 5 poems with a cover letter to submit.herontree@gmail.com. \n– In your email cover letter\, please include a list of your poems’ titles. \n– The poems should be attached in a single doc\, docx\, or pdf file.
