We’ve long admired the mighty power of the compressed form, which is why we are expanding our search for the very best in small fiction.\u00a0The Masters Review<\/em>\u00a0is excited to announce the new\u00a0Spring Small Fiction Awards!<\/strong>\u00a0This contest will honor a grand prize winner in three categories\u2014Microfiction<\/strong>,\u00a0Flash Fiction<\/strong>, and\u00a0Sudden Fiction<\/strong>\u2014by awarding $1,000 and online publication to each winner selected by the magnificent\u00a0K-Ming Chang!<\/strong>\u00a0A runner-up in each category will also be honored with a $200 prize and online publication.<\/p>\n

For this contest:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Microfiction\u00a0<\/strong>is any story up to 500 words.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Flash Fiction\u00a0<\/strong>is any story between 501 and 1,000 words.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Sudden Fiction<\/strong>\u00a0is any story between 1,001 and 1,500 words.<\/p>\n

We welcome\u00a0up to two stories per submission<\/strong>, in any combination of the three categories.\u00a0Please include both stories in one document<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Submission Guidelines<\/h3>\n

  • Grand Prize Winners<\/strong>\u00a0in each category receive $1,000 and online publication.<\/li>\n
  • Runners-up in each category receive $200 and online publication.<\/li>\n
  • Microfiction\u00a0<\/strong>is any story up to 500 words.<\/li>\n
  • Flash Fiction\u00a0<\/strong>is any story between 501 and 1,000 words.<\/li>\n
  • Sudden Fiction<\/strong>\u00a0is any story between 1,001 and 1,500 words.<\/li>\n
  • Your $20<\/strong>\u00a0entry fee allows up to two stories<\/strong>. If submitting two stories,\u00a0please include both stories in one document<\/strong>. If your two stories are from different categories,\u00a0please check both relevant boxes<\/strong>\u00a0in the submission form.<\/li>\n
  • Submitted work must be previously unpublished in any form. Reprints will be disqualified.<\/li>\n
  • Simultaneous and multiple submissions are allowed, though each submission requires a $20 entry fee.<\/li>\n
  • All submissions will be considered for publication in New Voices.<\/li>\n
  • This contest is for emerging writers only<\/strong>. Writers with book-length work published or under contract with a major press are ineligible. We are interested in providing a platform to\u00a0new writers<\/strong>; authors with books published by indie presses are welcome to submit unpublished work, as are self-published authors.<\/li>\n
  • International submissions are allowed, provided the work is written primarily in English.<\/li>\n
  • Note our deadline: June 1, 2023.<\/li>\n
  • All submissions will receive a response by the end of August.<\/li>\n
  • Winners will be announced by the end of September.<\/li>\n
  • Friends, family, and associates of K-Ming Chang are not eligible for this award.<\/li>\n
