The contest runs every other month during our \u201coff\u201d season (January-August), when regular submissions are closed.<\/p>\n<p>Flash 405 is judged by one of our managing editors or a guest judge. Each round is different; some judges will choose to have a theme, some will not. Please check the Call for Submissions post for each individual contest (listed below and on our blog) for details on the theme. General guidelines are as follows:<\/p>\n<h3>We accept:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fiction.\u00a0<\/strong>A complete story,\u00a0up to\u00a0<strong>405 words<\/strong>\u00a0(Get it?).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nonfiction.<\/strong>\u00a0A complete story, up to\u00a0<strong>405 words<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Poetry.\u00a0<\/strong>One poem,\u00a0up to\u00a0<strong>5 lines\u00a0<\/strong>(including prose poems).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stage &amp; Screen.\u00a0<\/strong>A complete scene, up to<strong>\u00a04 pages<\/strong>.\u00a0Please format according to the standard unpublished playwriting or screenwriting format.<\/li>\n<li><b>Experimental.\u00a0<\/b>A complete short form narrative utilizing\u00a0innovative techniques and\/or hybrid forms. Consider the spirit of flash as well as the limits of other categories for length guidelines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How does it work?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Submissions:\u00a0<\/strong>You submit your flash work via our\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/expositionreview.submittable.com\/submit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Submittable<\/a><\/strong>. All submissions are judged anonymously. Multiple entries are allowed. Simultaneous submissions and previously published works are not. One piece per entry. Each entry is\u00a0<strong>$5<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Judging:<\/strong>\u00a0We read your work. We deliberate, we duke it out, and eventually we narrow it down. Our judge chooses\u00a0<strong>1st and 2nd place,\u00a0<\/strong>along with<strong>\u00a0up to three\u00a0honorable mentions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Prizes:\u00a0<\/strong>The winners will all receive\u00a0<strong>publication<\/strong>\u00a0on the website.
