Theme: &#8220;Left Unsaid&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Pangyrus<\/em> publishes well-crafted, thought-provoking essays, poems, and stories online and in two print editions each year (one anthology and one specialty book). We welcome work in any genre and on all topics.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the work we accept will appear in our\u00a0<strong>12th print issue (Winter 2024-2025)!<\/strong>\u00a0The theme for the issue is \u201c<strong>Left unsaid.<\/strong>\u201d We like the phrase\u2019s suggestion of mystery, innuendo, high stakes, emotional conflict, and the limits of words. Sometimes what\u2019s left unsaid is the cause of pain, sometimes it\u2019s a source of power.<\/p>\n<p>Along with general submissions \u2014 on the theme of \u201c<strong>Left unsaid<\/strong>\u201d or not \u2014 we are interested in a few specific<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>categories:\u00a0<em>Zest!<\/em>\u00a0(food writing);\u00a0<em>In Sickness and In Health<\/em>\u00a0(health, the body, and society);\u00a0<em>Field Notes<\/em>\u00a0(science and the environment);\u00a0<em>Schooled<\/em>\u00a0(education);\u00a0<em>Generations<\/em>\u00a0(family life, parenting, relationships); and\u00a0<em>The Sounding Board<\/em>\u00a0(artful takes on politics and international affairs). We encourage you to read us at\u00a0pangyrus.com\u00a0to get a sense of what we\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<p>If you think our readers will find it entertaining and compelling, send it our way. We read every submission that we get with fresh eyes and open minds. Accepted work will appear online. Only some work will appear in our print editions. All authors of accepted work will receive a payment of $20 via PayPal or they may choose to donate the payment back to Pangyrus.<\/p>\n<p>All submitted work must be wholly original and previously unpublished. Please DO NOT send revisions of your work after you&#8217;ve submitted it.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Poetry <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We are interested in showing the range of poetry that exists in the contemporary moment. First and foremost, we publish poetry in a wide range of styles and voices that moves us deeply and has us see the world in a new way. Please send a maximum of<strong>\u00a03 poems\u00a0<\/strong>contained within a single document. Because our volume of submissions is high, we ask that you submit only once per reading period.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Fiction\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We are looking for well-crafted, thought-provoking fiction. Stories that are original, passionate, and surprising, with strong narratives and an implicit understanding of people interacting with each\u00a0other win us over.\u00a0The tastes of our editorial team are far-ranging and eclectic. We welcome any and all work that displays the rare gift of storytelling, that pulls our readers into the narrative and holds them there until the end. New voices and diverse voices are also a keen interest of ours.<\/p>\n<p>Word count: Submissions should be a maximum of 7,500 words. Because our volume of submissions is high, we ask that you send only one submission per reading period. Please, no previously published work.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Nonfiction\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We are looking for high-quality nonfiction writing that connects exciting ideas, tells a compelling story, and offers a fresh perspective.\u00a0We favor two kinds of submissions: short, focused essays between 600 and 1500 words, and longer, more reported features of up to 7,500 words.
