Ghosts, wraiths, specters. Poltergeists, phantoms, shades. They manifest in many shapes and dispositions in our lives and the literatures of all cultures. From the Egyptian to the Tibetan\u00a0Book of the Dead<\/em>, from the Homeric epics to Shakespeare\u2019s King Hamlet, from the Victorian ghosts of Sheridan Le Fanu, Violet Hunt, and M. R. James to Amos Tutuola\u2019s\u00a0My Life in the Bush of Ghosts<\/em>, from the ethereal creatures of Poe to the startlingly \u201crealistic\u201d ghosts of Henry James and Edith Wharton, phantasmagoric beings mingle with the living. Nature itself may be \u201chaunted\u201d\u2014an unknowable presence hostile to human intrusion, as in Algernon Blackwood\u2019s classic \u201cThe Willows.\u201d Sometimes a ghostly haunting is metaphoric; often it is literal. The Japanese jor\u014dgumo ghost appears as a beautiful maiden but is a lethal spider monster. Buddhism\u2019s hungry ghosts have enormous stomachs and tiny mouths that represent how worldly desires blocked their path to nirvana.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

WHAT TO SUBMIT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Conjunctions<\/em>\u00a0publishes short- and long-form fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and hybrid texts. We do not publish academic essays or book reviews.<\/p>\n

All submissions must be in English and previously unpublished. We will consider works in translation for which the translator has secured the rights.<\/p>\n

Although we have no official restrictions regarding word count, most of the manuscripts we select for publication are under eight thousand words long. For poetry submissions, we suggest sending half a dozen poems, depending on length.<\/p>\n
