Please read the full posting carefully. Failure to follow the Submission Guidelines may result in your work being rejected by\u00a0Syncopation Literary Journal<\/em>. We DO NOT accept simultaneous submissions but respond to writers in a very timely manner. Please note that it can be difficult for small journals to publish existing song lyrics. Consider paraphrasing when using another artist\u2019s lyrics in your submission.<\/p>\n

Syncopation Literary Journal\u00a0<\/em>seeks to amalgamate the realms of music and literature.\u00a0Syncopation<\/em>\u00a0is a free online, open-access journal. We are currently seeking poetry, short stories, flash fiction, and creative nonfiction for Volume 4, Issue 2, to be published on the website in June 2025.<\/p>\n

The theme of Volume 4, Issue 1 is\u00a0The \u201980s Issue<\/strong>. Music has the power to stir our emotions more than any other medium.\u00a0Syncopation\u00a0<\/em>wants your poetry and prose that relates to the music of this colourful decade.<\/p>\n

The fall of the Berlin Wall. Thatcherism. The \u201cblockbuster\u201d movie. Michael Jackson performing the \u201cmoonwalk.\u201d These are just some of the things that may come to mind when you think of the 1980s. All of the above (and more) can be linked to music. Tell us about the concerts you went to. The songs that remind you of the major events of the \u201980s. The tunes that remind you of the personal events.<\/p>\n

Submission subjects may include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n

*The New Romantics.<\/p>\n

*German pop music of the 1980s.<\/p>\n

*Tributes to the artists we lost in the 1980s such as John Lennon and Marvin Gaye.<\/p>\n

\n

*Soundtracks of \u201980s movies such as\u00a0Purple Rain<\/em>,\u00a0Pretty in Pink,\u00a0<\/em>etc. Memorable film scores too.<\/p>\n

*The Canadian music scene in the 1980s.<\/p>\n

Please note that\u00a0Syncopation Literary Journal\u00a0<\/em>IS NOT a peer-reviewed academic publication.<\/p>\n

If your submission has been previously published, please note that you may need to seek permission from your previous publisher(s) before your work is accepted by\u00a0Syncopation<\/em>. Please\u00a0NO SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS.\u00a0<\/strong>While we do not pay our contributors, there is no fee to submit. Publishing your work in\u00a0Syncopation\u00a0<\/em>is a great way to showcase your writing.<\/p>\n

Short stories should be 7500 words or less. Flash fiction should be 1000 words or less. Creative nonfiction should be 5000 words or less. Writers may submit up to 3 poems sent as 1 document. Please submit only 1 piece to each genre per submission period.<\/p>\n

We welcome submissions from both musicians and non-musicians. To see examples of the writing we publish, please read our past issues, available on the website. Please no graphic violence, sexually explicit subject matter, or overuse of profanity.<\/p>\n

Submissions must be written in English, MS Word Format, Times New Roman, Font Size 12. Please include an author bio of 100 words or less\u00a0at the end of your document<\/strong>. If your work has been previously published, please state the name and date of publication at\u00a0the beginning of<\/strong>\u00a0your document<\/strong>. Please send all submissions to\u00a0nwelshsyneditor@gmail.com<\/a>\u00a0with the genre of your piece in the subject line (i.e., \u201cSubmission: Poetry\u201d) by\u00a0MARCH 1st, 2025<\/strong>. All submissions should be sent as Word Document attachments. No PDFs.\u00a0DO NOT<\/strong>\u00a0copy and paste your submission into email messages. Please\u00a0DO NOT<\/strong>\u00a0submit your work as a DM over social media. Submissions sent via DMs will\u00a0NOT<\/strong>\u00a0be read. Email submissions only!<\/p>\n

Contributors retain all copyrights to their work. If you republish your work elsewhere at a later date, you must cite\u00a0Syncopation Literary Journal\u00a0<\/em>as a previous publisher. Reproduction of any form is strictly prohibited without the copyright holder\u2019s permission.<\/p>\n
