The Theme: Risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>THE 2025 GOLDEN QUILL WRITING CONTEST<\/h1>\n<p>Get your words ready! The theme for the 2025 SLO NightWriters Golden Quill Writing Contest is: RISK.<\/p>\n<p>The Golden Quill Writing Contest is a tri-genre contest that awards a total of $1,650 in prizes and publication in the 2025 issue of\u00a0<em>The NightWriter Review\u00a0<\/em>to the first, second, and third place short story, creative nonfiction piece (essays and memoir), and poem engaging with this year&#8217;s theme: risk.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s final entries will be judged by Juliet McDaniel, the author of\u00a0<em>Mr. and Mrs. American Pie<\/em>, the novel upon which the hit Apple TV+ series\u00a0<em>Palm Royale\u00a0<\/em>is based (fiction); Deanne Stillman, the author of\u00a0<em>American Confidential<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Twentynine Palms<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Mustang<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Desert Reckoning<\/em>\u00a0(creative nonfiction); and San Luis Obispo County poet laureate Caleb Nichols (poetry).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>CONTEST RULES &amp; GUIDELINES<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The 2025 theme is \u201crisk\u201d. All submissions must engage with the theme in some way.<\/li>\n<li>All submissions must be previously unpublished.<\/li>\n<li>The contest is open to writers 18 years old and over residing in the United States and Canada.<\/li>\n<li>Fiction and creative nonfiction (essays and memoir): up to 5,000 words.<\/li>\n<li>Poetry: up to 60 lines of poetry per poem; up to 3 poems per submission.<\/li>\n<li>Please use industry standard formatting as applicable to your form: Times New Roman, 12 pt., double-spaced, one-inch margins.<\/li>\n<li>First-place winners in each category will receive a $350 cash prize and publication in the 2025 issue of\u00a0<em>The NightWriter Review<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Second-place winners in each category will receive a $150 cash prize and publication in the 2025 issue of\u00a0<em>The NightWriter Review<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Third-place winners in each category will receive a $50 cash prize and publication in the 2025 issue of\u00a0<em>The NightWriter Review<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>All entries will be considered for publication in the 2025 issue of\u00a0<em>The NightWriter Review<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>All submissions will be online through our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/duotrope.com\/duosuma\/submit\/slo-nightwriters-golden-quill-writing-1VUB2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Duosuma submission portal<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Multiple submissions are welcome, but you must pay a separate fee for each entry.<\/li>\n<li>Simultaneous submissions are welcome, but please withdraw the piece immediately if accepted elsewhere.<\/li>\n<li>Entry fees are nonrefundable.<\/li>\n<li>Current SLO NightWriters Board Members are ineligible.<\/li>\n<li>Entry fee: $20 for SLO NightWriters members and $25 for nonmembers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>CONTEST DIRECTOR:<\/strong>\u00a0Harvey Ardman.
