Theme: Heat Wave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Midsummer Tale is open April 1 \u2013 June 21 annually.<\/p>\n<p>AMT is a summer-themed narrative writing contest open to non-genre<a href=\"https:\/\/tclj.toasted-cheese.com\/a-midsummer-tale\/#amtnote\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0fiction and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.creativenonfiction.org\/thejournal\/whatiscnf.htm\">creative nonfiction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the 2025 A Midsummer Tale writing contest is:\u00a0<strong>Heat Wave<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Climate change has led to more erratic and extreme weather events in recent decades. For this year\u2019s A Midsummer Tale, set your story during a heat wave or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heat_dome\">heat dome<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Your story must be set during the hot summer months and the theme must play an integral role in the story.<\/p>\n<p>Identify your story as fiction or creative nonfiction. For CNF entries, please indicate whether names have been changed.<\/p>\n<p>Length: 1,000 words minimum; 5,000 words maximum.<\/p>\n<p>Deadline for entries: 11:59 PM Pacific Time June 21, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Send entries to amtcontest25@toasted-cheese.com with the subject line: A Midsummer Tale Contest Entry<\/p>\n<p>Entries are blind-judged by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.toasted-cheese.com\/snarkers\/#beaver\">Beaver<\/a>. Decisions are final. Winners are announced July 31.<\/p>\n<p>Winning stories are published in the September issue of Toasted Cheese.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If 50 or fewer eligible entries are received, first place receives a $35 Amazon gift card, second a $10 Amazon gift card &amp; third a $5 Amazon gift card.<\/li>\n<li>If 51 or more eligible entries are received, first place receives a $50 Amazon gift card, second a $15 Amazon gift card &amp; third a $10 Amazon gift card.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Questions? No science fiction, fantasy, mystery, horror, thriller, romance, western or other genre fiction, please.<\/p>\n<h1>General Writing Contest Rules<\/h1>\n<h2><strong>Read these first.<\/strong>\u00a0These rules apply to all Toasted Cheese writing contests.<\/h2>\n<h3>Note: These guidelines are for contest entries only.<\/h3>\n<p><em>FAQ answers<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No entry fee.<\/li>\n<li>No registration.<\/li>\n<li>No geographic restrictions.<\/li>\n<li>Use the email address (see note below) that you\u2019d want a winning gift certificate sent to or include that email address in the bio paragraph.<\/li>\n<li>One entry per author or set of authors. Only one gift certificate will be sent per entry (i.e. gift certificates will not be split between authors who share a credit for a single winning entry).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Disqualifiers<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No attachments of any kind.<\/li>\n<li>No simultaneous submissions.<\/li>\n<li>No plagiarism or AI-assisted entries.<\/li>\n<li>Do not send before contest opens. Do not send after contest closes.<\/li>\n<li>Do not send to any email address other than the one specified for the contest.<\/li>\n<li>Do not send more than one entry. Your entry should include the following elements in this order:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Title (Word Count)<\/li>\n<li>Story<\/li>\n<li>Name or byline and brief bio<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>About six weeks after the contest closes, you will receive a reply to your entry email with a notification of the winning entries. If your story is a winner, it will include information about your gift certificate. Public announcement of winners is made first on the TC page, then on social media. Toasted Cheese and its staff are not responsible for any electronic transmission problems.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the volume of entries we receive, judges can\u2019t provide feedback on individual entries. We also close the email address after sending the notification so replies won\u2019t be read. If you need to contact us, the notification will tell you how to do that or you can go\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.toasted-cheese.com\/snarkers\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Fine print:<\/em><br \/>\nBy entering a contest, you grant TC exclusive electronic rights for a period of 90 days, should your work be chosen as a winner, as well as a non-exclusive right to maintain a copy of published work in the literary journal archives indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>Effective January 2008, you also grant Toasted Cheese the right to post an audio version (podcast) of your work on the site (authors of work published 2001\u20132007 will be contacted to obtain permission for this use). You retain all other rights, including the right to re-publish the work in non-electronic form at any time. Any subsequent publication should include the credit \u201coriginally published in Toasted Cheese.\u201d\u201dExclusive electronic rights\u201d means that you agree not to re-publish your work elsewhere online while the issue featuring your work is current. \u201cPublish\u201d means any public display of your work, and includes your personal website and posting to message boards. You are welcome to link to the page featuring your work instead. Once the issue has been archived, you are free to re-publish your work online.<\/p>\n<p><em>About email addresses:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Amazon gift cards sent to winners who use AOL, Yahoo, and Comcast email addresses more often than not do not make it into the winner\u2019s inbox. All three also have a history of bouncing replies\/notifications and making submissions look unusual or unreadable on our end.
