What does it mean to\u00a0<em>have\u00a0<\/em>freedom? How does it feel when it&#8217;s taken away? What is freedom when it infringes on someone else&#8217;s?<\/p>\n<p>The word connotes different definitions and bears different weights for each of us. It manifests itself in unexpected ways and settings, and remains absent or suppressed in so many others.<\/p>\n<p>We want to read literature and take in media that explore, challenge, reconsider, or explode that concept for you.<\/p>\n<h3><u><strong>Submission Guidelines<\/strong><\/u><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Send submissions via\u00a0<strong>Submittable<\/strong>\u00a0only.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Please include a short cover letter and bio<\/strong>\u00a0(50- and 100-word max., respectively).<\/li>\n<li><strong>We accept<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>one\u00a0<\/strong>prose submission<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>one<\/strong>\u00a0poetry submission (of up to three poems),\u00a0<strong>or<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>five<\/strong>\u00a0pieces of visual art\u00a0<strong>per author, per submission cycle<\/strong>.\u00a0<u>Submissions that do not abide by these rules will not be considered for publication.<\/u><\/li>\n<li><strong>Your work must be previously unpublished.<\/strong>\u00a0(Stonecoast alumni may submit already published work for consideration as reprints.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>We encourage simultaneous submissions.<\/strong>\u00a0However, please withdraw your submission immediately if it&#8217;s accepted elsewhere. If you submit multiple poems and one is accepted at another publication, please attach a note on Submittable identifying which poem is no longer available.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Please adhere to standard manuscript format:<\/strong>\u00a0Double spaced, 12 pt., Times New Roman font. Poetry may be single spaced. (If you tell us that diverging from these rules is integral to your piece, we will consider it.)<\/li>\n<li>While we love to represent stories with raw, emotional truth, we ask that you refrain from submitting pieces featuring\u00a0<em><strong>excessive<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0sex, violence, assaults, or suicide<\/strong>. We also ask that you include trigger warnings when needed.<\/li>\n<li>We will reject pieces determined to be written by the use of\u00a0<strong>AI software.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><u><strong>Genre Guidelines<\/strong><\/u><\/h3>\n<p><em>As a reminder,\u00a0<\/em><em><strong>all<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<em><strong>pieces selected for publication will be featured online in June 2025<\/strong><\/em><em>.\u00a0<\/em><em><strong>Due to page constraints, only a few of these selected pieces will be featured in both the print and online Summer 2025 Issue.<\/strong><\/em><em>\u00a0Please see below for word count limitations based on consideration for either Hybrid (Print + Online) or General (Online-only) publication formats.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fiction.\u00a0<\/strong>In accordance with the theme of freedom, the fiction editors are looking for stories that invite the reader to think about what it means to have freedom, how it feels when that freedom is taken from us, and what it means to write from a place of freedom. We are looking for stories that push the boundaries of traditional fiction with regard to form and content.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>For consideration for\u00a0<\/em><u><em>Hybrid Publication<\/em><\/u><em>: limit submissions to 2,500 words or fewer.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>For consideration for\u00a0<\/em><u><em>Online-Only Publication<\/em><\/u><em>: limit submissions to 5,000 words or fewer. One submission per author, per submission cycle.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Popular\/Genre Fiction.<\/strong>\u00a0We are looking for popular fiction of all genres and storytelling traditions that engages with the theme of \u201cfreedom.\u201d How do we define freedom? What does it mean to have it or be without it?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>For consideration for\u00a0<\/em><u><em>Hybrid Publication<\/em><\/u><em>: limit submissions to 2,500 words or fewer.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>For consideration for\u00a0<\/em><u><em>Online-Only Publication<\/em><\/u><em>: limit submissions to 5,000 words or fewer. One submission per author, per submission cycle.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Creative Nonfiction.<\/strong>\u00a0We are looking for a diverse array of Creative Nonfiction works that engage with readers and challenge the boundaries of conventional storytelling. We are interested in how writers explore freedom both in their personal and public lives, as well as pieces that engage with a variety of worldviews. We encourage experimentation with hybrid forms of essay and memoir and are particularly interested in works that are both socially-relevant and personal.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>For consideration for\u00a0<\/em><u><em>Hybrid Publication<\/em><\/u><em>: limit submissions to 2,500 words or fewer.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>For consideration for\u00a0<\/em><u><em>Online-Only Publication<\/em><\/u><em>: limit submissions to 5,000 words or fewer. One submission per author, per submission cycle.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Poetry.\u00a0<\/strong>The staff values attentiveness to language, form, and craft. \u00a0We want poems that make us gasp and wonder and take us beyond ourselves. For this issue, we especially want poems that explore, challenge, reconsider, resist, or reclaim the concept of freedom.
