Our fourth standard issue \u2013 themed around the idea of\u00a0<\/span>Mending<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 is now open for submissions until\u00a0<\/span>DECEMBER 12th<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mending in the traditional sense \u2013 fixing a hole in a dress, darning a sock \u2013 is a long, slow, focused process. Mending is patient, physical, and persistent; when one is mending, they have not yet reached the destination of\u00a0<\/span>healed<\/span>, but are presently participating in the act of healing.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>What does it mean to be present and active in the process of healing? When something needs to be fixed, how do you begin to put the pieces back together? Where do you locate processes of mending and healing in your body? In your everyday routines? In your actions, both intentional and non-intentional?<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>For\u00a0<\/span>Jelly Squid<\/span>‘s fourth standard issue, we’d like you to send us work that reflects on the idea of mending as a slow process of repair. To us, mending feels physical, intentional, and patient; what does mending feel like to you?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Please send all submissions by email to\u00a0<\/span>jellysquidmag@gmail.com<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>Prose submissions can be up to 3,500 words. Poetry submissions can include up to three poems that equal no more than six pages in total length (please submit all poems in one document). PDFs are preferred. Visual art submissions can include up to three pieces of art.<\/span>\u00a0Please o<\/span>nly send us one submission in one category per reading period.<\/span>\u00a0We also ask that you send us a short<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>third-person bio<\/span>\u00a0along with your submission. Do not include your name anywhere in the document you are submitting.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Jelly Squid<\/span>\u00a0accepts work from writers of all backgrounds, but we are especially interested in publishing work from writers who have been published six times or less (or not at all<\/span>)<\/span>. This is not a requirement, but if this is you,\u00a0<\/span>please let us know!<\/span>\u00a0We want to give your work the time and attention it deserves.\u00a0<\/span>We love to see work from young writers, but\u00a0<\/span>please do not submit if you are under 18. Do not submit work created using AI.\u00a0<\/span>Also \u2013 this should go without saying, but we want to be clear \u2013 we at\u00a0<\/span>Jelly Squid<\/span>\u00a0do not tolerate transphobia, racism, homophobia, misogyny, ableism, zionism, or any bigotry of any sort.\u00a0<\/span>If you send us work that expresses bigoted views, we will automatically reject it<\/span>\u00a0and will not consider any future work you might send our way.\u00a0<\/span>

\n<\/span>We accept simultaneous submissions, but make sure to let us know. If you have to withdraw a piece (or pieces), please let us know immediately via email. We do not accept previously published work (work that has been posted on personal websites or social media is ok). If you’ve had your work published by us before, please wait to submit again until a full issue cycle has passed since the issue you were published in (for example, if you had your work published in Issue 1, you can submit to us again for Issue 3).\u00a0<\/span>

\n<\/span>We do not currently offer payment upon publication, but we hope this can change at some point in the future. Submissions are always free. All rights revert to authors upon publication.<\/span>

POETRY:<\/span><\/strong>
\n<\/span> We accept any form of poetry, but especially appreciate free verse and prose poetry. We like to see poems that are raw and honest \u2013 poems that surprise us, make us shiver, make us think.<\/span>
\n<\/span> Please submit no more than three poems at a time. We ask that you submit your poems together in one document (please do not include any information about yourself in said document).<\/span>
\n<\/span> Please limit your work to\u00a0<\/span>6 pages or less total.<\/span>\u00a0Do not submit more than one packet of poems at a time.<\/span>

FICTION:<\/span><\/strong>
\n<\/span> We like flash fiction, micros, autofiction, character studies, weird fiction,\u00a0<\/span>and much more<\/span>… any kind of work that has something to say without trying to\u00a0<\/span>limit<\/span>\u00a0it<\/span>self to the confines of traditional storytelling models.<\/span>\u00a0We like stories that care more about expressing something unique and noteworthy than following a linear plot or a clear narrative. We do not accept science fiction or high fantasy, but we are happy to accept pieces with sci-fi or fantasy elements.\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span> For\u00a0<\/span>flash fiction and short stories,<\/span>\u00a0please limit<\/span>\u00a0your submission length to\u00a0<\/span>3<\/span>,<\/span>5<\/span>00 words or less<\/span>. Do not submit more than one piece at a time.<\/span>

\n<\/span> We l<\/span>ove to see hybrid work \u2013 please don’t hesitate to send things our way that you’re not sure how to define. Finding pieces that blossom in the spaces between genres is one of the most exciting things to us about the work we get to read.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
