We encourage those who submit to think outside the box; we look for stories that fit the theme yet make us think about it in different ways; we want work that satisfies and challenges traditional forms of storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>The theme for our eleventh annual issue is\u00a0<a class=\"link-color sbm-text link accessible-link\" href=\"https:\/\/expositionreview.com\/2025\/09\/call-for-submissions-for-vol-xi-para-social\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;PARA\/SOCIAL.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Read more about how to submit below!<\/p>\n<p><strong>PARA\/SOCIAL:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Issue XI begins with an infinite tension.<\/p>\n<p><em>Para<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 altered, beside, beyond, against.<br \/>\n<em>Social<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 the networks of intimacy, recognition, and belonging we carry with us.<\/p>\n<p>Joined together, these words suggest closeness without reciprocity; connection without contact. We hear it most often in the context of celebrity, cashiers, counselors, and colleagues \u2013 unreturned attachments we form out of unmet needs.<\/p>\n<p>But what if PARA\/SOCIAL is more than a warning label?\u00a0 What if PARA\/SOCIAL signals possibility?<\/p>\n<p>To write into PARA\/SOCIAL is to explore:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The tenderness of feeling known by someone who does not know you.<\/li>\n<li>The estrangement of being \u201cwith\u201d people while remaining apart.<\/li>\n<li>The creative sparks that fly in parallel play \u2014 lives brushing close, never fully merging.<\/li>\n<li>The edges where community becomes illusion, and illusion shapes community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For this issue we invite work that traces the edges of intimacy and illusion. We seek longing projected across distance, the distortions of connection, and the gifts of being alongside \u2013 with or without perception and recognition.<\/p>\n<p>This theme is not a verdict, but an invitation: to consider how we live beside each other, how we build connections through shadow, screen, and story, and how we might reimagine the boundaries of the social altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Let PARA\/SOCIAL pull you, softly or wrenchingly, in opposite directions. Let the word unravel and remake itself through your work.<\/p>\n<p>Author receives $50.00 USD for accepted work. \u00a0All submissions received by October 31 will receive guaranteed feedback from editors.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Poetry<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>We accept submissions of up to three poems of any form and in traditional or experimental styles. Any additional poems will\u00a0<strong>NOT<\/strong>\u00a0be read.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Please include all poems in a single document!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Fiction<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>We accept submissions of short stories and stand-alone novel excerpts up to 5,000 words. Pieces that exceed this limit will\u00a0<strong>NOT<\/strong>\u00a0be read.<\/p>\n<p>Note that we tend to lean toward literary fiction, but exceptional genre fiction that fits the theme will be considered.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Flash Fiction<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>We accept submissions of up to three pieces* of flash or microfiction. Each piece should be no more than 1,000 words; there is no minimum word count. The shorter, the better!<br \/>\nPieces that exceed this limit will\u00a0<strong>NOT<\/strong>\u00a0be read.<br \/>\nNote that we tend to lean toward literary fiction, but exceptional genre fiction that fits the theme will be considered.<br \/>\n<strong>*Please include all flash fiction in a single document!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Nonfiction<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>We accept submissions of memoir, personal essays, and creative nonfiction up to 5,000 words.
