We are looking for pieces of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry that portray the writer's interpretation of purgatory.
We seek work that actively pushes boundaries, that forces us to question traditions and tastes.
Three prizes of $1,000 each and publication in Briar Cliff Review are given annually for a poem, a short story, and an essay.
We are open to all styles, but we favor nonfiction with an edge.
Submit to us your best, the box under your bed marked UNSHARABLE, the orphan poem or black sheep fiction. Send us your experimentals; be vulnerable, be calculated.
The premise (target theme) must be an integral part of the plot, not necessarily the central theme but not merely incidental.
The theme is meant to jumpstart your imagination. You may interpret these themes widely.

We like good storytelling in poems metaphorically rich with imagery, poems in which every word counts, poems that leave the front porch and go beyond the trees.
Poets must be women, which is inclusive of transgender women and female-identified individuals.

Open to unpublished poems of any length on any subject. You do not have to subscribe to Mslexia to be eligible, but you do have to self-identify as a woman.
